Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12 won't update the library when I add an item to the library, additionally when I delete a file from it's containing folder the media player doesn't remove it from the library. Can you help please?

If all these steps suggested above doesnt work close WMP12 stop all running services and try to open : "C:\Users"Your Username" \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player" and delete all the contained files (maybe copy them to another folder for a backup).
Afterwards open WMP 12 press F3 and the library index works how it is supposed to!

WMP has never visibly crashed, and there are no WMP related errors in the log(s).
The problem isn't just new files moved to the folder not showing up. Often files that have been deleted or moved out of a folder that's included in the library will continue to show up until deleted manually from the library, or WMP is opened and closed several times, or I move files out of and back into the folder. In the worst cases the old files hang around undeletable and require rebuilding the library / deleting the wmdb files to clear.
Windows media library just seems to have a lot of problems keeping the 'library' in sync with folder contents. That said, I'll take WMP/Library any day over the nightmare that is iTunes...
Jeff: it sounds like your WMP library keeps getting corrupted. Are you sure that WMP and Windows Media Center are closed properly each time? If WMP frequently crashes then that would be a possible cause.
You may also want to check Event Log for WMP-related errors. Open the Start menu, type event in the Search box, and click on Event Viewer in the list of programs. In Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs - Application, and look for Error in that list.
2.5 years later and this problem still happens frequently.
I have a 'shared' folder where I place files I want to stream to my xbox 360. Seems every other week I have to go through stop service, delete \Users?\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\ folder and wait for the library to rebuild just to get a single new video file to show up and the old ones to go away. Having to rebuild the music and pictures library just to update a single video folder is just silly.
Is this ever going to be properly fixed? How hard is it to monitor when the contents of a folder change and update the 'library' to reflect the changes?
