Every so often, 1 in 50, my laptop is very slow to start-up I get the "Please Wait" before the login screen. Once I do log in I get the error:
"Failed to connect to a windows service.
Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."
Aero seems to be disabled also and cannot be fixed without a restart. This problem is getting to be bothersome and I need to know if it could be hardware related. Thank you in advance for you help.

Hi,
Since when are you facing this issue?
Did you make any software or hardware changes to the computer recently?
Check if the System Event Notification Service is running or not. To check for the services
1. Click on Start
2. In the start Search box type Services
3. Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN
Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type.
System Event Notification Service Started Automatic
Also, check the dependency services that are required for System Restore Service to run.
To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab.
For the system being slow you may try to improve the performance by optimizing Windows and check if that helps. Follow the link given below on how to optimize Windows.
Optimize Windows 7 for better performance

The aero issue can be resolved by installing or reinstalling the updated graphics card drivers. You may check if any update for the Graphics card is available for your computer from the computer manufacturer.

Hello all,
IT MIGHT BE DOUBLE INSTALlED AUDIO DRIVERS!!! please read on:
After my last post I did not intend to comeback here as a fresh installed system is not expected to have issues.... But after having an almost complete reinstall of all programs, I inserted my earphones. Just for a test, because what could possibly go wrong an a new installed system? .... the result was horrible: the "Failed to connect to a windows service" message appeared!!!!!!!
Therefore I decided to continue in a systimatic way:
-instal w7
-restart
-test earphone (plug in and play some sound)
-restart (this gave no error)
-instal the audio driver (something from IDT or so)
-restart from the prompt
-restart (just to be sure)
-test earphone (plug in and play some sound)
-restart (this gave no error)
-instal the graphic cart driver (NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M version 8.17.12.6883)
-restart from the prompt
-restart (just to be sure)
-test earphone (plug in and play some sound)
-restart (The error appeared!!!)
Therefore I uninstalled everything from NIVIDIA on my pc. That is: from the device manager and from the "uninstall a program". In the later I found that NIVIDIA also installed an audio driver! That means that there are TWO installed on my system....Where is that good for?
-deinstal driver and software
-restart from the prompt
-restart (just to be sure)
-test earphone (plug in and play some sound)
-restart (this gave no error!!!!!!!!)
From here I needed to reinstall windows again because I screwed up with an older driver of the video cart. So I reinstalled windows, the IDT audio driver and the video cart without the NIVIDIA audio driver. And it works! :D I am so happy now ;)
Thus most probably the problem exists due to a double installed audio driver! (it is most probably as my computer is not completely installed jet with all its programs. This is also why I cannot do a proper spell check on this text and why I must apologize form my bad English because I am dyslexic )
chears,
Jeroen
Sorry it didn't wotk for you. I too have had issues in the past uninstalling 'problem' devices that insist on returning after a reboot.
The difference here, I think is that there was no uninstall option on the devices properties dialogue, suggesting there were no drivers installed; so I used the context (right click) menu on the device listing to access uninstall. In your case the issue was probably drivers not installed correctly, corrupted or some othe MS glitch which meant when you uninstalled, the drivers were there and installed themselves again, albeit incorrectly, therefore the devices won't go away.
Hello All -
I have had the same problems as many others on this thread for a while now: slow to boot, System Event Notification Service not running, aero theme not working. After reading through this thread, I tried the netsh/winsock reset, which fixed the aero problem (at least temporarily), but not the slow boot or event service issues. I checked Device Manager to see if I had any problem devices, there were none. Referencing other posts, I do not have either Windows Live, Soluto or the Bing bar installed on my machine.
I agree with others: these problems do seem to be related to one another, or at least to occur concurrently. I wish Microsoft would step up and address this properly . . .
Thanks all for their suggestions -
