One Month Battery Life MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000

I purchased this mouse a few months ago, and use it daily.  I'm very happy with the performance, but not with the battery life.

I am forced to replace the battery every month, almost to the day.

The mouse is used primarily with my desktop system, both in my web development work, and general usage.  I estimate my active use at 8 hours daily, but my systems are powered on all the time.

I have used new name brand alkaline batteries (Energizer, Duracell) and the last 2 months, Energizer Lithium batteries, with no difference.

It's impractical for me to turn the mouse on and off throughout the day.

The packaging claims up to 10 months of battery life - obviously I'm not getting anywhere near that.

I have the latest intellipoint drivers and otherwise my Win 7/64 system is up to date.

Do you have any ideas why I'm having this issue, and what I might be able to do about it?

Thanks in advance - as I said, I love the mouse, but the battery costs are eating me alive!

Have you tried contacting MS support about getting it exchanged/replaced? How about the place you bought it? I've had a few wireless mice, and their batteries have all lasted longer than a month, but only one has lasted as long as 10 months. I have a MS Natural Wireless Laser 6000 that they last 6 months, almost to the day. But the batteries in my Logitech V470 Bluetooth Notebook mouse last about 4 months, and it's turned off more than on.

I think you have a defective mouse, but I'm sure neither your merchant nor Microsoft would take my word for it :-)

    It would seem that they are perpetually producing mice with the same defect. Not to mention, they are blatantly lying on the packaging and in their own product description, which is illegal. Not that Microsoft cares. As with their operating systems, they are about quantity, not quality. After this thread, being as old as it is, it seems at this point that they're well aware of the design flaw.

    These are great tips if you have any mouse other than the Wireless Mobile 4000.  If you are an owner of the 4000, no energy-saving tips are going to help. 

    I bought mine about 6 weeks ago. The first battery lasted around 2 weeks (never turned off).  Now a battery lasts about one day if I forget to turn the mouse off.  Maybe leaving it on all the time speeds up the deterioration of battery life. 

    It is unusable at this point, and will have to be replaced.  Of course the packaging and receipt are long gone, so it cannot be exchanged.  I have no choice except to purchase a new mouse. 

    I know that there is always a chance of getting a defective product, regardless of what you're buying, but this is a 2-year old thread.  Seems like a few defective mice would have made it off the shelves by now.  Is there a design flaw, or are they perpetually producing mice with the same defect?

    When you consider what I paid for the mouse, the batteries, and the replacement, this turned out to be the most expensive mouse I have ever owned.

    Hello all,

    New to MS forums but 20+ experience with these money grubbing SOB's. I too have the MS Wireless Mouse 4000 and have to replace the battery at LEAST once every 6 weeks. Not months. 6 WEEKS. I've noticed that if you take out the nano-tranceiver you'll keep the battery life (and turn off the mouse as well at night or when away from the computer for longer than 10-15 minutes. I'm getting sick and tired of paying more for batteries per year, than the mouse itself!

    Some tips:

    1. Turn off mouse
    2. Remove Nano-Tranceiver from laptop and put back in the under-carriage of the mouse so you don't lose it.
    3. Don't lose the Nano-Tranceiver or else you're going to have to buy a whole new mouse set. Apparently the mouse and tranceiver are paired as one. I lost the tranceiver part once and bought the same one knowing full well of the cost of batteries.
    4. TURN OFF EVERYTHING at night. I know people like to keep the laptop/desktop on because of "updates" from Windows or your Anti-Virus Software, but it's unnecessary because you can just do it during the day.
    5. Good luck. Even rechargeable batteries pose the risk of losing juice even more quickly. Buy the 20-pack batteries for $10 at a Radio Shack when they do their battery sales. It should last you two years.

    My new mouse battery has lasted one month; had to change it today.  This is so far short of the 10month that is quoted that it is a misrepresentation under the trade descriptions act.

    I also have a Logitech Anywhere Mouse which is slated for consuming batteries.  It has two of them but lasts more than twice as long at this MS mouse.
