I have upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Professional. I used Windows Services for Unix in XP but have been informed this is not available for Windows 7. I do not see a NFS Client in the Windows 7 Professional version. What options are there?

Nope - this is wrong - it is only available as a non-installed component on Enterprise versions of Windows 7. As you can see from this screenshot is NOT available on Professional:

I can understand the frustrations of those who bought "Pro" only to find it lacking NFS client services, however I am inclined to ask, "Who purchased your system and who made the choices as to which machines and compatible operating system decisions?"  As much as I agree professional is aimed at a marketing group more likely to rely on such a service/feature being available, this was something that could have been verified prior to making those decisions.  Don't blame MS for the failing of your consultant not providing you accurate information by which to make you buying decisions.

Is it right, and do I agree with MS's choice to leave it out of pro. ABSOLUTELY NOT, unless the goal was to alienate their customers, but people in closed rooms without windows making these decisions are out of touch with real world application, and always have been for as long as there has BEEN technology, and it is YOUR OWN responsibility to research the products you buy BEFORE finding out it isn't up to suiting your needs.

In the mean time, find the positive here....after all, you also choose how you feel or respond to situations, and you make the ultimate decision (Excuse the pun) as to whether you walk away from this mad and have you day ruined, or learn the lesson and bring value to this experience so that it is not simply "wasted money and time" for someone else's shortcoming.

However Microsoft, if this WAS IN FACT a marketing decision to push those needing this service/feature, to purchase Enterprise or Ultimate then PRINT IT IN BOLD LETTERS that it has been excluded from, or is only included in, which ever versions you are releasing, to allow customers to only then purchase ONE version of the same OS, rather than dissing them first by not mentioning the change from the previous generation of your system resources provided on equivalent versions of its predecessors.

I would suggest at this point, requesting from MS sales support, if they would allow you to return your keys to make them invalid and issue you keys for either of the versions it is included in, and only have to pay the difference between your initial purchase and the cost of the versions you need, and maybe they will meet you in this manner and take responsibility for their portion of the failing in these experiences so that every one comes out where they had expected to, with only the loss of replaceable keys going down the drain with the wash!

    It can't hurt to Try!

This is unacceptable. How does PROFESSIONAL not have NFS support?

In order to activate the Client for NFS, go into the Control Panel, and go to "Programs and Features". In the left hand column, you'll see a link for "Turn Windows features on or off".

Select that, and it will open a list box that shows all of the optional components built in to Windows 7. Some are already activated. Expand the entry for "Services for NFS".

Marilyn, There is *NO* "Services for NFS" listed in the Windows Features dialog box.  What do we do now?  How do we get this Services for NFS installed on our Windows 7 Pro x64?
