I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical. If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on. If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

I am also having this issue myself right as I speak.i have about 15 to 20m each time I use it then its cuts off.been this way since I bought the laptop.i have no other problems with anything else but my laptop which is running off of Windows 7.wish we could get a confirmation on it being a program bug so we can figure out another way around it!?
No, I doubt that the message indicates anything malicious. Your case is different from the one I originally responded to. The message occurred whenever a user was accessing the internet via a wireless hub.
In the scenario you are describing it is possible that some users are using fixed IP addresses that are causing the conflict. Fixed IPs work well in a controlled WAN when the IPs are assigned by a central authority. However if some users tinker with there connections and appropriate another users IP then conflicts arise. It may also be possible to have a similar conflict where some users are using DHCP and others have set up fixed IPs.
As to paranoia a healthy dose of paranoia is a good thing in the IT world.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with Vista and it does it to me all the time. Not every time but sometimes when I try to connect to WiFi with my Kindle or my netbook or my desktop, My Wi-Fi disconnects and gives me the error message. No it's not critical but it's annoying as **** having to unplug reset everything constantly.
Same problem here. I was find tone of solution on internet but any of them cant help.
Don't you just love it when someone says... "I would advise". When you see this you just know that it's not going to feel very good. How about we avoid that phrase from now on?
