I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical. If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on. If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

It isn't microsoft. I would advise that if you have no idea what you are talking about you don't point fingers at the conglomerate that does. It is an issue with verizon modems and IPv6.
Hi Ronald - thank you so much for a detailed/throughout response. I don't mean to sound paranoid, but my question - how likely is it that someone else installed software or a piece of hardware that caused this notification? I have not installed any new software whatsoever on my laptop recently, and only one of the two protocols was checked when I looked at the network settings. Moreover, I work from a space shared by multiple companies working off the same wireless connection, and sometimes leave my laptop unattended for an extended period of time. So is it possible in some rare cases that the message could be more serious than a simple malfunction within the machine/indicate something more malicious?
Would be very grateful for any advice.
I did not have this problem until my XP computer stopped working and I had to get a new computer with windows 7 on it. Now I have two computers running windows 7 with a Verizon jet pack. I don't know how to assign a new IP address to my laptop. I think Microsoft should fix this problem with a update.
After reading many pieces of advice while not being a tech geek, this appeared to be well-written, credible, and simple to try. IT WORKED!!! Thanks so much Ronald!
