Service TrustedInstaller.EXE permanently active taking up to 50% CPU resources

On my machine (Windows 7, 64 Bit) the TrustedInstaller.EXE is permanently active. The amount of used CPU changes permanently. 2 seconds 0 % then up to 50% (I have a dual core) for a second then down to 0.

Rebooting the machine did not help. Also a complete Virus scan was negative.

I have monitored the process with the Process Explorer tool. I can see that the process always access the same Registry key when it gets active. The key is

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-IIS-WebServer-AddOn-2-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.

Hi Robear,

in the meantime I have found the process that was responsible for the trustedinstaller activities. It was the xenservice.exe that was installed together with the Citrix XenCenter on my machine. I have killed this process and suddenly the trustedinstaller.exe stopped its activities. So the problem is solved now because the XenCenter can work without this process and I will remove it from the auto

Thanks for your help.

Martin

I've had the same problem for a few weeks now. Also, I was receiving phone calls from foreign strangers claiming to be the "Microsoft Technical Company". How they got my phone number and knew that my "computer is having problems" makes me extremely uncomfortable, on top of the fact that their instructions seemed more likely to get them into my computer, as opposed to helping the actual problem.

On top of this, I have searched my computer for TrustedInstaller and was led to C:\Windows\winsxs where I tried to delete over 86,000 files (at least, that's how many it counted before it told me I do not have sufficient permission).

I'm inclined to disbelieve that these 86,000+ files are all related to system updates and computer scans. But, if this is so, shouldn't there be a way to clear this cache? Disabling automatic updates has not removed this problem.

    Why start new thread?...

    • Because the OP found the cause of his problem & marked the thread as ANSWERED.
    • Because chances are you don't have Citrix XenCenter installed.
    • To avoid confusion & duplication of effort.
    • To help you help yourself.
    • Because this thread is nearly three-years-old & predates the release of Win1 SP1.
    • Because every computer and the applications installed (or previously installed) on it is, by definition, different.

    Have a wonderful day!

Why start new thread? then SAME PROBLEM is in thousands of threads with basically the same answer, no matter what version some has, the only things that change is how you get to the process, names of tabs, windows, etc., and the "trusted" installer.exe is still a problem.  Have had this computer for a year, new one with Windows 8 has the same problem, it's 2 months old, and this one with Windows 7 just started recently - Norton telling me high CPU usage by "trusted" installer.exe; my Win 7 computer doesn't have Citrix, never even heard of it until W8 computer started with the "trusted" installer.exe errors and Win7 has same problem (with no Citrix on W7 64-bit).

If you don't want to answer, don't.  Telling someone to start a new thread within a thread that is already there, same problem over 3 years at least, just in this 1 thread, is counterproductive.  Answer their question or don't, no reason to tell them something that doesn't help them.
