windows 7 backup error "shadow copy could not be created"

Ø  What backup utility are you using?

This could be Volume Shadow Copy service and SPP services are not started.

To restart the Volume Shadow Copy service and SPP services

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

1.    Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.

2.    Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.    If the SPP service is disabled, double-click it to open the service properties.

4.    If Volume Shadow Copy service is double-click it to open the service properties

5.    Click the Startup type list, click Automatic (Delayed Start), and then click Apply.

6.    Under Service status, click Start.

Event logs are special files that record significant events on your computer, such as when a user logs on to the computer or when a program encounters an error. Whenever these types of events occur, Windows records the event in an event log that you can read by using Event Viewer

To view the Event :

Applications and Services Logs vary. They include separate logs about the programs that run on your computer, as well as more detailed logs that pertain to specific Windows services.

1.    Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.    Click an event log in the left pane.

3.    Double-click an event to view the details of the event and check for

red errors pertaining to Backups/VSS/SPP.

I have had this problem with 2 computers, at least 4 external hard drives, and Acronis as well as Windows backup.  On one system it finally became impossible to write anything to an external drive.  It is sporadic and may seem to be fixed, but so far has always returned.

I am repartitioning and attempting to load Linux systems as well, but on one computer backup failed the first or second time, before I did anything else.

I have not seen anything from MS personnel which indicates that they know what is going on.

I posted this on the thread you suggested and it is the quickest and simpliest way that worked for me to get atleast the 40MB needed to create a shodow copy.[A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. The specified object was not found. Error code: 0x81000019]!!!  This is a much quicker way that worked for me. I just right clicked on the 100MB drive in manage my drive view and selected properties..  I checked compress all files and folder on the 100MB and I had to skip 1 or 2 but it went from 30MB to 60MB free space.. Then for the first time it did a full backup....WOW!!!

I am also getting this error message :( A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. The specified object was not found. Error code: 0x81000019 ):  I have tried to find a solution to fix this error with no success.. nothing posted on web seems to help..  Maybe this is a VISTA issue that has not been addressed in Windows 7 !!!!  Had to dust off my old Norton Ghost V12 and install it on Windows 7 machine.  I did a complete imageback up in less than an hour ..  I guess Microsoft has a lot of work ahead of them to get a decent back up program that is acceptable to the end user..
