Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

  1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
  2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
  3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

    I wish it were that simple but it isn't.  I have tried this of course and after seeing JonnyMaki's recent message I double checked - mine is turned off and has been from the beginning.  The question is, which versions are you using.  It seems to me that those using XP Professional - I am using the Home versions of both XP and W7.   None of the solutions offered so far have worked for me.

    I think it is worth repeating that if a password is being requested, then there ought to0 be a way of setting it or re-setting it.  If not there is a problem that Microsoft seem very reluctant to solve, fix or explain. 

    To be honest I'm pretty fed up with it and have found a workround that suits.  It involves walking up and down a flight of stairs armed with a memory stick !

    I had this problem.

    All these answers were wrong for me.

    By default Windows 7 asks for a password to connect to another computer on a network.

    You can turn this off.

    Got to Network and Sharing Center.

    Click on Change Advanced Sharing Settings on left hand side.

    Scroll to very bottom and turn off Password Protected Sharing.

    Voila, Done.

    This problem happened to me this week 7/20/11 and no solutions I could find anywhere on the internet worked including network setup, workgroup, credentials, checking the date, reinstall XP, virus scan, sharing settings, creating duplicate users, matching user passwords, ...etc.

    It turns out I have AT&T U-verse and the router was going bad.  Once they replaced the router it didn't ask for ID and PW any more.

    My suggestion...after hours of trouble shooting with no solution...replace your router. Hope this helps.

    Hmm, I'm having the same problem right now, and what's boggled my mind this whole time, is that it only happens SOMETIMES. Most of the time I've never had a problem accessing the XP computer and files. Very intermittent. Reading your post...I in fact have AT&T Uverse and its router. Will look into this next.

    I had the same problem. Turned out I forgot to share anything on my XP machine. Once i did that the dialog box stopped showing up
