Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

  1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
  2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
  3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

    This problem happened to me this week 7/20/11 and no solutions I could find anywhere on the internet worked including network setup, workgroup, credentials, checking the date, reinstall XP, virus scan, sharing settings, creating duplicate users, matching user passwords, ...etc.

    It turns out I have AT&T U-verse and the router was going bad.  Once they replaced the router it didn't ask for ID and PW any more.

    My suggestion...after hours of trouble shooting with no solution...replace your router. Hope this helps.

    Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!! I would have never found the whole "credentials" thing on my own!!!! I don't even know how all of that got set that way. I have been trying to connect to my other computer for months!!! Thank You!!

    OMG...I have 20 Yrs of experience with MS, Unix, Netware, XP, 2000, Vista. It ended up being the Date.

    I had reset the The Date on my XP PC and it was off by more than 1 day from the Windows 7 Laptop. My XP box was able to access the Laptop folders just fine, but the Username/Password from W7 to the XP refused to work.

    The date...This s the ONLY site that mentions the date. Someone PLEAZ tell MS to STOP making windows do things on its own...we Sys Adims run things on purpose and we know how to override...I had the date set wrong on my XP on purpose for debugging purposes....I can now no longer do this and access the XP from W7.

    Thank you MS for once again providing NO support on an issue that is so far in left field its difficult to explain to experience IT ppl.

    This solution seems the simplest - pity it doesn't work for all of us.  I am a user - an ordinary user with home versions of both XP and W7.  This should not preclude me from finding a solution to this problem.  What I cannot understand is that if the system is asking for a password - then surely logic says that a password exists.  Not one of the contributors to this long winded thread has actually found a way of using a password - all the solutions (as far as I can tell) is to bypass the request.  Isn't that a cop out ?   Can someone explain to me, in relatively simple terms why the solution does not involve going the password route?
