Can I import MPEG-4 files into Windows Movie Maker in Windows Vista?

Windows Media Player 11 recognizes and plays MPEG-4 just fine but WMM doesn't recognize them.  I would like to import some MPEG-4 files into Movie Maker and work with them - is there a codecs or something that allows this?

I'm sure I can find a program to convert MP4 into a format MM will recognize but if possible I'd like to just skip the conversion step and work with MP4 directly in MM.

Thanks!

Movie Maker is not compatible with MP4 files...

best bet would be to convert them to .wmv.

The following freebie might be worth a try:

Format Factory

http://www.pcfreetime.com/

All to MP4 / 3GP / MPG / AVI / WMV / FLV / SWF.

All to MP3 / WMA / AMR / OGG / AAC / WAV.

All to JPG / BMP / PNG / TIF / ICO / GIF / TGA.

The problem does seem to narrow down to OS. On Visa, WLMM cannot read the MPEG-4 videos shot by Windows Phone. On 7, however, these videos work excellently. I use WLMM all the time to turn my phone videos into complete home movies, but I have to use my 7 PC, not my Vista laptop.

I **was having the same problem, BUT (**after using a converter program for a few weeks to get around it - I started to have audio sync issues with large HD conversions) JUST tried again on my older vista machine (with updated Movie Maker) and was still having the same problem (MP4 errors) sifted through the lit. found that MP4 is (now) supported, went back to my Win7 machine and PRESTO WORKING LIKE A CHARM (no converters, or conversion time req.)

(Not sure what's up with the vista machine, doubtful that there are enough folks still working on it?)

Could you describe what happened that made

you think the converted MP4 files are corrupt.

Did you convert them to WMV?

Does it improve the issue in Movie Maker if you

go to...Tools / Options / Compatibility tab and

left click the Restore All Defaults button?

    What a laugh !

I just purchased a Windows Phone - it makes all video recordings MP4 by default !

There is nothing I can do about it.

I want to edit those movies in the latest Windows Movie Maker version 2.1 (WMM 5.1) - no can do.

I tried transforming the films through the links provided on this page (Format Factory) - apparantly it transforms the films with errors - WMM will not be able make the films with errors. Hours of lost work !

I have now spent time to download yet another software that will fix the errors - obviously it is time-comsuming involving a lot of remaning and identification of what films out of almost a hundre that are OK, and which are not - batch processing is not an option in trial versions of the downloaded software.

Please bring back the old days, where windows programs were able to speak with windows equipment. You force loyal users to move away from your products and chose others. I could suspect Apple or others to have placed their own people in the Windows staff to mess things up and sabotage it all.
