Can I import MPEG-4 files into Windows Movie Maker in Windows Vista?

Windows Media Player 11 recognizes and plays MPEG-4 just fine but WMM doesn't recognize them.  I would like to import some MPEG-4 files into Movie Maker and work with them - is there a codecs or something that allows this?

I'm sure I can find a program to convert MP4 into a format MM will recognize but if possible I'd like to just skip the conversion step and work with MP4 directly in MM.

Thanks!

Movie Maker is not compatible with MP4 files...

best bet would be to convert them to .wmv.

The following freebie might be worth a try:

Format Factory

http://www.pcfreetime.com/

All to MP4 / 3GP / MPG / AVI / WMV / FLV / SWF.

All to MP3 / WMA / AMR / OGG / AAC / WAV.

All to JPG / BMP / PNG / TIF / ICO / GIF / TGA.

Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows 7 is not the same as Windows Movie Maker (XP, etc.).

Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows 7 does accept MP4 files.

Windows Movie Maker does not accept MP4 files.

I've just updated my earlier thread to this effect, but I also found that recommendation for the " K-Lite Codec Pack " but was to nervous to try it for fear of making things worse (like you, I didn't feel I knew enough about what I was doing).  In case it's not obvious from my updated thread, I can report that having done a clean install of Win7 and the latest version of WLMM, I can now open and work with those mp4 files that would not open before in WMM (and Vista).

    Thanks for the feedback.

Probably too late to be of any help.

I am seeking the same answer to this issue (MS Movie Maker not recognizing my FlipCam mp4 videos to import for editing; prefer software recognition to solve the issue, over the need to convert files to satisfy the software) and for whatever it's worth, I came across other exchanges on this same Microsoft Answers site, that presumably included a MS Support Tech (amongst others) under the questions phrased in the following manner:

and thought it might be of interest to the discussion here to you all...

In summary the answers suggested installing something called " K-Lite Codec Pack " and was replied to that it worked, but I myself do not know, but would like to know if that is a viable solution.  There seemed to be warnings of "Proceed at your own risk", confirmations that it worked for Windows Live Movie Maker but may have effected Movie Maker differently, so if review with focus.

I am curious to know if it is a good, safe and reliable solution or not but I lack the sophistication to really test it myself so I offer this purely as additional reference.
