I have been receiving information from a Microsoft Tech since last Thursday on how to repair the problem with Windows Update failure to dowload the .net framework security updates.
I received the following fix this morning which repaired the problem. This is for those using Windows XP.
Be sure and following the instructions carefully.
Plus, I'm sure many of you are seeing the Windows Update icon in your system tray right now. Donot download those updates until you have finished all of the below.
The fix cleans your computer of all previous .net framwork files, subfiles and registery keys and you begin with a clean start.
This is not the Clean Install software that was recommended to us several days ago that didnot work. This is new and it fixed the problem on my computer.
Again, donot download the Windows Updates currently sitting in your system tray until you've completed all of the following:

I understand that the following 2 updates still cannot be installed. The error code 0x645 is received.
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86
In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, please refer to the following steps.
Step 1: Use .Net Framework CleanUp Utility

Step 2: Reinstall .NET Framework Version 2.0, 3.5 and their updates

Please download and install the following updates in order.
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)
After that, please restart the computer and then install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and its update.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

Note: When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and follow the directions to save it on the Desktop. After downloading the setup file on your Desktop, double-click to manually install it.

THANKS SO MUCH!!! Have been working for 2 days, trying to get Netframe 3.5 to download. Any one downloading TURBOTAX 2009 should use this site.
Geekgirl,,my understanding is you have Net Framework 3.5 Sp1. You do not need Net Framework 1.1 because you have the latest Net Framework update now you do need 2.0 but you do not need 1.1 so uninstall it.On your updates you can choose windows updates or microsoft updates ,,I also have windows xp and have had almost every problem at one time there is. I do not understand why you need to download the cleanup utility go to the microsoft community page where you can chat with people I have a hard time explaining this but you can get windows updates you may need to check and see if you are the administrator which means that you have the right to basically download updates try that go to the adminidtrator part of the updates it could be simple as that but really you do not need Net Frame Work 1.1 because you have the latest version uninstall that one and try going to tools and then go to internet options,check the box that says delete history on exit, then setting,, view files,,and then edit and delete the temporary internet files,, don't worry you will receive all them back soon as you start browsing again,, also click on content at the top and then clear ssl state,, and last click on advanced,,and click restore advanced settings,, then close out your browser and start it again. I hope this helps you,, Oh sry before the advance step you have a program in your accessories that says disk defragment,,check volume C and then D to see if you need to fefragment your files,,,remeber to do this step before the advanced step,, after you have done these steps you should be good to go and this should clean up your computer,,the more we download the more MB we use. I really hope this helps you and you may not need the advanced step after you do the other ones first.

This is for James with the problem about the service pack 2 or 3 download. I have had the service pack 3 for about 3 years now and it works great, also when ou install it it gives you the hotfix updates your computer needs always have your computer set to receive important downloads, and once you have installed a service pack such as 2 or 3 you no longer need service pack one the same gors with once you update from service pack 2 to service pack 3 you no longer need 2 having these on your computer just crowds up your space. also if you do not have MSE which is a free anti virus protection program it's full name is microsoft security esentials, and it basically takes care of itself with only around 11 MB it also saves valuable space just remember once a day open it up and click on update at the top,,and just remember before installing this to uninstall your old virus protection fist,,It is a wonderful virus protection program and even my daughter can use it and believe me she is only 10 yrs old..lol.I hope this helps someone.
