original title: No audio output device is installed.

I have done nothing different to my computer but noticed yesterday that the speaker icon in the system tray has a red and white "X" over it and says that "no audio output device is installed." I have Windows Vista. When I go to my control panel and click on "Sounds and Hardwar," and again click on "Sound," it tells me that "No audio devices are installed." Yesterday I went to --> All programs --> Accesories --> System Tools --> System Restore and I did a system restore that way. After my computer re-started, the audio problem was solved but somehow my anti-virus protection was no longer installed. I fixed this with the McAfee support online chat and the audio was also working all day yesterday. However, today, it again says that "no audio output device is installed," and I do not want to restore my system again and have to deal with the anti-virus software going haywire again. Is there another way to fix this? Please help me. I have looked this up on other support sites and have found the answers too technical for me to understand. I have a one-year-old Toshiba Satellite M205 with an Intel Centrino processer and Vista with Service Pack 1 installed although I don't know if that is important information or not. My computer has a sticker on it that says "Dolby Sound Room," whatever that means. Thanks in advance!

Hello

Yesterday the message NO aUDIO output device is installed showed up on my computer. It stated that there was a registry error (multiple devices using the same index id or something like that) so I went into my registry files Run>Regedit>ok and deleted the upper-something in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Control>Class>4D36E965 section. For the DVD/CD-ROM drives section. This seemed to fix the caution (yellow thing) that showed up under DVD/CD-ROM drives (DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device and HL-ST DVDRAM GT34N) in the device manager. However I ran a DxDiag and found that my Intel (R) Audio driver was not being detected still. And I stil have the "No Audio output device is installed" showing up in my tray. I did an admin sfc /scannow and the computer found corrup files that is saved in Windows\Logs\CBS but it wont give me access to read the txt file. I am including the DxDiag file that the computer gave to me below. I believe I have tried everything. I did all the re-installing and updating of drivers before looking into the register fix. Now I just dont know what direction to look into. Um...Sorry about it being extra long. I'm not sure what to leave out.

i followed your adivce about looking at my device manager for my sound ,i then updated the driver software it said i still had the software and my sound is still not working please can you tell me what i have to do next thanks
