Trying to fix Chkdsk from freezing at stage 5 of 5 when scanning and trying to recover bad sectors and fixing file system errors

About a while ago I ran chkdsk to check and recover bad sectors and fix system files and it then froze at 43% on stage 5 of 5. I left it on through out the night and I went to school and came back it was still at 43%. I then manually shut down the computer and ever since I have been trying to fix the problem. It was the second time I ran chkdsk on this pc while having windows 7 I usually run chkdsk every month or so to make sure everything is functioning right. After my problem occured I have tried so many things i have ran spinrite,I have reinstalled windows, I have tried to run chkdsk on safe mode, I have tried sfc/scannow, and chkdsk /p and all of these things did not fix the problem. Chkdsk /p was the only thing that didnt even try to fix anything because it said invalid parameter. Also when I reinstalled windows 7 on my pc then chkdksk froze at 49% on stage 5 of 5.  I even ran diagnostics from the bios and I use Seagate Seatools and both diagnostics said my hard drive was perfectly fine. I also  tried running chkdsk from the windows 7 cd and for some reason it completed in less than 2 hours. I then ran chkdsk from the pc and it then froze again this made me think that there had to be something wrong with my pc. So I was wondering how can I get chkdsk to complete perfectly from my pc again instead of using the windows 7 cd each time.

I duplicated the results a second time without any problems.

Next step is to simulate the recovery to my hard drive when configured as closely to the way your drive will appear below:

    100MB             267.98 GB NTFS           30.00 GB NTFS

    Healthy            Healhty (...)

Will update you on my results.

If this works then there will be some up front work you need to do which I'll provide after I do this test.

I will then need to change the documentation/instructions considerably and verify they are correct step by step before you can proceed.

    Hold the press !

I got it to work this morning using Acronis.

Will see if I can duplicate the results and then get back to you.

I hope you still have the Acronis Image Backup file you created. If not then you may still have a day or two remaing on the Acronis trial version so make another backup of the 'System,Reserved' and 'Windows' partitions.

Acronis and Ghost both failed. This is not to say the products will not work as intended as I was trying to use them in a way that theoretically should have worked but not a technique you will find in either manual. I suspect the root cause for lack of success has nothing to do with either Acronis or Ghost but in the various utilities or Windows XP that I tried in order to perform a “Full” format of the hard drive’s Windows partition.

At this point you have two choices:

    1. Replace the hard drive.
    2. Isolate the bad sector and end up with two large partition partitions and your smaller backup partition.
