why is there no multi band equalizer for windows 7?
Yes I understand that you can change the settings in media player to change the equalizer, but this is useless for example when listening to online material, this is a step backwards !. I cannot find any compatible programmes that can allow me this, which has always been available on previous windows.

What kind of audio chip do you have?
The AC97 (most common) comes with a nice utility to do all this. It's only 10-band but hey ...
The utility (called Sound Effect Manager) is installed into the control panel by default.
Failing that, try Control Panel>Sound then select your speakers and click Properties>EnhancementsOne of those options is an EQ of sorts with some presets down below.

So? That means nothing. All other versions prior to now had to deal with less diversity, less advanced features and less bundled drivers to start working just after installation. How many cd's of drivers did you had to install in XP for everything just working? One for the sound card, another for the graphic card, another for the motherboard, for the bluetooth dongle, for the printer... and so on, and of course, a lot of restarting after each hw install. In W7 you just had to install the OS and everything was already working, but sure, if you're looking for some fancy stuff you should then install the drivers from the hw manufacturer, and if they don't have then complain to them, who are the responsible for that, not MS.
And btw, I'm not related to MS in any way, just in case, I just wanted to point out that you're complaining to the wrong guys.
I stumbled onto this while streaming Slacker Radio and wanted to adjust the levels. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP Pavilion g7 laptop. I did go to CONTROL PANEL - HARDWARE AND SOUND. I have the basic options; devices, sound, display, all of which have NO equalizer. However, the bottom of my list has an SRS PREMIUM SOUND selection. Clicking this brings up a black panel with a master control and a volume control for all outbound devices. Across the top of this there are four selections, one of which is LISTENING EXPERIENCE. Clicking this brings up a 9 band EQ with 20 presets and an option to save custom settings. THIS WORKS FOR ALL MUSIC COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS, REGARDLESS OF THE SOURCE. I'm not sure what "SRS" is from or who it is by and may be only part of the AMD chipset that I have on board.
I hope this helps for those running into this issue on laptops of the HP variety. I would include a screen shot if the post would let me.....
I found a program that works it has a 2 day free trail so you can use it to see if you like it. it works across the entire windows 7 OS streaming videos, playlists in WM..... only took me 2 weeks of searching lol the program isprofoundsound lite i found it from softonic they had lots of programs but none that adjusted the actual sound from the internet only recorded files i plan on buying the upgrade after the 2 day trial runs out, it does work. and it works regardless of what sound card you have
Your machine has a soundcard/driver with an equalizer. As some others in this thread that didn't understand the question also pointed out. BUT, for instance, my Dell 780 has an Analog Devices SoundMax that doesn't have even bass/treble controls...
What we are still waiting is for Microsoft to provide a SOFTWARE IMPLEMENTED GLOBAL EQUALIZER that would work for everybody no matter which lousy device/drivers we have been supplied by hardware manufacturers...
Linux, even the tiny version in my Android phone, does it better...
Sadly, I don't think that even Windows 8 has this sorted out.
