“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    im having this problem only when i try to open world of warcraft. i dont know much about computers and its really **** me off how i cant play. ive read a lot of the posts here and my computer isnt overheating. if anyone here can help me please do.

    How could it be that when my computer is ice cold? Is it possible it's overheating inside despite the fact that it's cold to the touch everywhere on the outside? Wait, I actually tested my temps, and they were all at like 40C, so that's not it. If this indeed did fix it for you, I'd have to say you're not having the same problem 90% of us are having.

    Had the same problem with my R4890 cyclone.

    Replaced thermal paste, no luck

    Then Replaced my PSU with a new one, no luck

    Replaced the VGA with a new Sapphire 6870, no luck

    Replaced my CPU Fan with a Thermaltake Contact 29 AND BINGO THERE IT IS!

    Turned out to be a CPU overheating problem.

    Now the interesting part, with my old case which really sucked, i had the problem once in a while, not as much as it used to happen before so i decided to GET THE UBER HAX : Silverstone Raven RV02 and now the problem is no more.

    I wanted to share this with you guys because this problem got me frustrated for so long and consumed a huge amount of my time so as a start, try replacing your CPU cooler with a HAXZOR one and see what happens.

    From what I read on TweakForce, this problem has been happening since 2008, on XP, Vista, and 7, with many different video cards and drivers. This would point to it being a hardware problem, which we all previously thought it wasn't. And good luck sending your computer in for repair, because if they can't replicate the problem after probably 15 minutes of trying, they will send it back as fixed. My problem happens once every few days, so ya.
