Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    I have just had the same problem... I am doing a college course in photography and i have to have the pictures i take in a certain order to show the tutor group.

    The way to do it is - first of all number the pictures by renaming them, in the order you want them to appear.

    Then click on organize in the top left corner. Then click on select all, the pics will all be highlighted, then just under the pics do a RIGHT click, scroll down to sort by on the drop down box, then click on type and click on Ascending.

    This then should put your pics in number order - If you need to rename them with something as well as a number then just put the title of the pic after the number.

    Microsoft Why do you hesitate to repair yournew opperating system. You need to stand behind your products. Win 7 driver data base needs severe update Your drivers are all out of date ! My pictures lacks functionality IEOrganizing items within a folder this is a MESS a blatent ERROR All of us out here think this is Stupid. How can you tell us that we do not need to be able to move our files around. Please fix and monitor your systems. I find you to be non responsive in these matters. I haven't even mentioned the Bluetooth 2.1 mess that scrambles computers like you poured a Beer into your computer. It is time to step up and Be responsioble for your mistakes

    Where is drag and drop gone I can't rerange my pic's within a folder. What idiot did this The more I use win 7 the more stupid problems I discover Wake up Microsoft I wnat this fixedimmediately.
