Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    I've "purchased" an HP Pavilian with a bluray player, however the software player appears to not be campatable with Windows 7. I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers. This is particularly aggregious in that it worked fine for months after purchase but now, for some reason, it's incompatable with Win 7. I have even tried reformating my hard drives and reloading Windows 7 without possitive results. Is this a glitch on your end or am going to have to replace my bluray player/software for something specifically compatable with Windows 7? Any suggestions would be helpful.

    I have Windows 7 and had to reload it after my avast got turned off by a vrius. In all the time I have had Windows 7 my bluray player did not work for bluray disc,but when I reloaded it I played b[uray discs for two days just fine till I let windows 7 update. Now no more bluray player. So Windows 7 is capable of playing bluray in Media Player till its updated to lock it out.

    This isn't a technical issue for Microsoft.  This is a legal issue.  Microsoft didn't jump on the Blu-ray band wagon when it was first released but instead decided to go with the HD-DVD.  Becuase of this unfortunate decision they are not licensed to use Blu-ray and probably won't be for some time since they were one of the competetors of Blu-ray.  Sony is the owner of the Blu-ray technology and they are probably still upset at Microsoft for going the HD-DVD route.  If you can convince Sony to license Microsoft for use of the technology then the issue will be resolved quickly I'm sure.

    @Kevin You should probably open a separate topic, as your issue is not related to this topic about native Blu-ray playback.

    Mention the exact model you use, what do you mean by it used to work and now it doesn't in Windows 7 (did you upgrade from Vista to Windows 7?), what Blu-ray drive (I assume it's external) and software player (and version) you are using, whatever you remember might have caused the problem (did you install or update some software or change hardware,) etc. It would help troubleshooting your issue.

    Right now it's a bit too vague to make any useful suggestion. Well, apart from the one I just made. ;-)
