Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

Thanks,

Chris

"The problem lies with the sound card and drivers" yes, but only in windows 7. They really need to address this. Most people who buy computers with windows 7 that want to record are screwed. Yeah, it works for some, but according to a lot of talk on the web, a lot of people are not happy. I've been able to record through the "line in jack" since 1999 with windows 98 and now I can't. I know my way around a computer and have tried everything... then all I get from MS is "It appears the X-Fi Xtreme Audio does not have a hardware loopback" Well, it appears that you shouldn't have a hardware loopback then, becasue Dell bundles their machines with X-Fi Xtreme Audio!!!!!!!

It sounds like you have a pretty good system.  I bet you are proud of that sound card so instead of saying change it I will say dont get a realtek or you will still have the problem but add a cheap sound older sound card.  I know that sounds strange but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the old raggedy sound card you have in the closet will likely fix this problem.  I had the problem on two systems now.  One with xp and now windows 7 and window was not the problem it was the sound card.  This explains why some computers have the problem and some do not.  The problem lies with the sound card and drivers.  For real try an old sound card or get one a cheaper one and I think you will find some truth to this.  Good Luck!

    Listen everyone...

I went around with this and found the answer in this

In the SPEAKER'S PROPERTIES BOX go to LEVELS and UNMUTE the microphone.

If you have this it WORKS. My problem was that I was just looking at the WRONG microphone. I have a "MICROPHONE" and I have a "FRONT MIC" - I was plugged into the "front mic" not the microphone.

The MUTE button is the little picture of a SPEAKER (yeah, dumb for a mic). My "FRONT MIC" had a red X on it. I clicked it and all is well.

Just look hard at what you are doing. I tried the registry fix and the Audio Repeater. My Gateway did not have the same settings as the Dell, and Audio Repeater still give 50 ms of delay, which is unacceptable for music recording.

But unmuting the prper microphone is Speaker Properties did fix the problem completely. Wow, I was almost as upset as the rest of you until I saw that.

By the way - once you get this it does not matter if the "listen to this device" checkbox under microphone properties is check or not - for me, but I am "front mic" not the "microphone" jack.
