windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    After one hour the query "hdmi win 7 no sound" has increased by 30.000 persons. Since Win 7 HDMI users are only a fraction of the total Win 7 users it is very evident that all HDMI users have problems. Microsoft has to handle this problem more serious!

    "hdmi win 7 no sound" show 704.000 hits on Google. Thats a lot of people having driver or settings conflicts with recent release of Windows. I have tried everything. Cannot see any coflicts in Device manager. The video is perfect but the audio does not sound at all. Both worked well with Vista. I can "see" the green blinking bar on the volume control but I cannot hear it. The HDMI alternative does not at all appear on the sound menu, only Line and Spdif or  when i use the  Realteks latest  driver, Speakers and Digital output. The headphones show up as expected when I connect. But not the HDMI.

    Anyway found the best way to get sound with HDMI without uninstalling anything or windows update or driver update or rebooting. Your system does not matter whether it is Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway etc… on any TV via HDMI.

    Compared to Vista, I guess Windows 7 sometimes fails to determine the current audio where the video is being played. My example would be the problems when downloading at first the Windows 7 OS, when I downloaded it and installed it did not work but when redownloaded Windows 7 and installed it again, then Windows 7 worked. Others only did once other did twice or more, mine several. Anyway this is not a conflict or hardware problem but maybe safe to say a Windows 7 pnp glitch because it works fine after you do below steps. Between Dell, HP and Sony test, Dell did not show my TV (HDMI Output) as one of the sound options until I switched to projector only.

    1. Make sure you are connected to the TV via HDMI.
    2. Switch to projector only.
    3. Open sound control panel.
    4. Right click on your digital TV make as default playback device.

    The next time you try to play anything with your HDMI cable the video and audio will work without setting anything.
