While Windows 7 works and looks good, there is one major issue which threatens to derail the entire experience for me.
Several times a day, the default gateway becomes unavailable, which means that the PC running Windows 7 loses internet connectivity. At the same time, other PCs, running Vista, are continuing to work normally. This includes one PC with a WiFi connection and another which is normally wired.

The problem is solved by manually having to repair the problem when Windows 7 finds that the default gateway is not avaialble and resets network controller 2.
I have seen that this is not an isolated with several reports on the net, some suggesting that a different driver might help, but which one? Any suggestions?

It's one of many known nVidia issues with Windows 7 that nVidia must correct, unfortuniately Microsoft has nothing to do with it. I would sugguest that you contact nVidia for assistance.

I have this problem constanly ! It is windows 7 and windows live msn thats causing the problem ! MICROSOFT are to blame ! It is rediculous that they can screw up a persons experience surfing and chatting as easily as they do yet provide no fix for the problem they have caused ! Windows 7 is an abomination !!!!! And yet they have made it so you cant roll back to XP ... Who do they think they bloody are !!!! ....Bring back XP and dump Win 7 ! ....... Rob
I've just started using a brand new computer with Windows 7 and I am experiencing the "default gateway not available" problem. And I see that this discussion has been going on for two years or more! I will try disabling McAfee next time it happens. But, the point is: None of us should have to finagle temporary solutions like that. MICROSOFT SHOULD ADDRESS THIS!!!
This is not the case for me. I have a pair of AMD/ATI 4000-series cards running, and I have this problem, as well. NVIDIA is not the root cause, because I have no NVIDIA components in my system.
My worst problem now is that my internet-ready tv which is hooked directly to internet via a 10-100mbps Netgear fast ethernet switch controller says "not connected" though both ends of the ethernet cable are blinking green. But my (new) HP 6vd Pavillion laptop is on net at same time from the same ethernet switch & my NetTalk device is OK on this hookup too. I had my ISP check this issue & they said my account showed 2 IP addresses. So the ISP tech shut down 1 of the 2 & filled in the empty 4 numbers for the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, preferred & alt. servers which showed in the "DHCP" wired connection manual settings "window" of my tv. The tv then connected to the net & my Netflix app said it was loading titles & the "browsing" window appeared, but then I saw my PC was no longer connected; so I then re- connected PC to net using Windows "Network & Sharing" program. This caused the tv to disconnect from net again. FYI my net service is 7 mbps ISP says. With TV, NetTalk VOiP, & PC on net at same time is this enough bandwidth? Or is this situation purely an IP address, default gateway, etc. set of problems as my PC' HP diagnostics program states?
