Low Battery Notification does not pop up when battery reaches critical level after upgrading to windows 7

I upgraded to windows 7 recently and the battery notification does not work when the battery reaches it's critical level. It worked fine with vista. Before when the battery reached 25% the icon in the notification area there was a visual reminder and when the level reached 5% a pop up would occur. Now with windows 7 I get nothing to remind me. I checked in the power options where I can edit my power plans and the battery notification read that it was turned on.

I was also having this problem of Windows 7 of just going into hibernate on low battery without notification.

I checked out the Microsoft site for Battery faq and how t change low battery notification which didn't tell me something I didn't already know. So I decided to experiment some. I discovered that when I changed my Critical Battery Action to "Shut Down" from "Hibernate", the Low Battery Notification popped up and could switch to a power source. I changed the Critical Battery Action back to "Hibernate" and the Low Battery Notification still pops up. I guess the system just needed a little push :)

My install is barely a week old so I guess the installation didn't make the correct settings. Having applied some changes to the settings has caused the system to behave correctly in this case.

I hope this will help others with this issue.

The icon might be hidden. Here's how to show the battery icon:

Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Properties.
Under Notification area, click Customize.
In Notification Area Icons, click Turn system icons on or off.
On the Turn system icons on or off page, under Behaviors, click On in the drop-down list next to Power, and then click OK.

Well, this discussion started in 2009. It is now 2017, and Windows 7 is still not giving a reliable notification that the battery is low. Also, Meghmala's 'solution' suggests that Microsoft's selection for the default setting is not a good one. The default setting should protect the user from losing their work from unexpected situations. Let me say that another way: the user should not have to 'set up' the system to protect from losing work. If there is some reason that the user wants the settings to be different, then they can change the settings away from the best protective state. This applies to other things, like autosave as well. Don't set things up so we have big surprises at random times and can't recover.

I had the same problem but now it's solved. I changed the Power Plan from "Power Saver" to "HP Recommended" and instantly got a "ding" along with a big visual notice that my battery was about to die and that I should plug in my computer.

So, at least for me, the parrot lives but only so long as I'm using the HP Recommended setting:)

Hi

This was helpful. I had already set the notification for battery at 95% and it was still crashing at the times i have not realised it was not plugged in, and there was still no notifcation. but then I ran it on battery and watched but this time I had changed the setting to hibernate at 95%.there was no warning but the moment it went into hibernate this at leaat warned me. It prevented a crash,
