Can not boot XP at all - Getting Bluescreen error

Hi all,

I am running XP SP3 on a Dell Vostro 1510 A10 BIOS with a SATA drive and Intel Core2 Duo CPU (warranty is expired). I recently got malware and removed it, with some experienced help, using ComboFix and HijackThis. It was successfully removed, computer rebooted, and Kaspersky online virus scan showed no more problems. Then windows updater (which was disabled by the virus) downloaded and installed updates. Yes, I see several people are having similar problems. On the next reboot attempt after installing the updates, I got a BSOD, error codes 0x0000007E (0xC000001D, 0x80537008, 0xBA4CF3B8, 0xBA4CF0B4). I cannot enter safe mode - system freezes during list of drivers - last driver listed is mup.sys. I cannot enter windows recovery - another BSOD with error code 0x0000007B. I cannot get into the HD to recover my data, so I do not really want to completely re-install. Oh, my systems diagnostics say the HD is ok. I appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Try this...

Symptoms: Computer started, loaded raid drivers and showed the XP startup screen for a half-second then went to BSOD with a Stop Error Code of 0x0000007E - many users also seeing (0xC0000001D, 0x----------, etc) as well.

Solution: 

  1. Boot from your Windows XP CD and start the recovery console. You may need to press F6 while RC loads in order to load SATA drivers; you will then have a c:\WINDOWS console prompt.
  2. Type: CD $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst (this is the update I had to uninstall to get out of the boot loop, other updates may be uninstalled by changing the directory name to $NtUninstallKBCODE$, where KBCODE is the KB code)
  3. Type: BATCH spuninst.txt
  4. Type: exit

Be sure to set your system to boot from the HD before resuming. Hope this helps. Saved me a lot of hassle today.

If that doesn't work, MS also issued updates for KB978262, KB971468, KB978037, KB975713, KB978251, KB978706, KB 975560 and KB 977914 last night.  You can insert those codes in place of the KB above and try until you get a solution.

    Part of the problem is interpretation.  The MS update(s) did not "cause" the problem.  The system being infected is the problem.

    The issue with the BSOD is not caused the MS update, the issue is the system is infected and the MS update brings the infection to the surface.

    Uninstalling the update does not fix the problem and leaves your system vulnerable.  

    Uninstalling the update may get your system going again, but your system will still be infected and you will be minus a critical security update.  Is that good advice?  Wouldn't that actually be a bigger problem?  

    After this experience you would want to reconsider your malicious software protection choices because whatever you are using has failed to protect you (usually MSE).

    The correct procedure would be to uninstall the update to get your system running, relieve your system of the infection using better scanning tools, then reapply the critical update.

    You don't need to buy a Recovery Console CD - make one.  I give them away like milk bones.

    You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burning it to a CD.

    The bootable ISO image file you need to download is called:

    It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on a computer that is working.

    You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD ROM drive as the first boot device instead of the hard disk.  These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load.  If you miss it, you will have to reboot the system again.

    When you boot on the CD, follow the prompts:

    Press any key to boot from CD...

    The Windows Setup... will proceed.

    Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

    Select the installation you want to access (usually  1: C:\WINDOWS)

    You may be asked to enter the Administrator password (usually empty).

    You should be in the C:\WINDOWS folder.  This is the same as the 

    C:\WINDOWS folder you see in explorer.

    What if we do not have the Windows XP CD...neither the restore disk or program load disk?

    I too have this problem, would welcome any help!

    I have a somehow similar problem that you encounter that need an expert solution...

    Please read thoroughly... before commenting..

    I have NOT been ABLE to BOOT my XP partition properly via every other means...

    1st of all, I have posted in several threads which returned w/ no significant solutions to my problem, which was initialised when I accidentally formatted the HDD with XP partition with a Linux (OEM ASUS EeePc) onto my ACER Aspire 4720. It was configured to run on 2 OS ( Dual Boot- Vista & XP) WHICH WORK Perfectly fine prior to that.

    what I did then was, I immediately do a HARD shutdown within 5 sec (using POWER button) then removed installation CD from DVD-RW drive... but it was TOO LATE...  SERIOUS DAMAGE  have already been done to the booting record (MBR).

    So, I search on various recovery remedies on many different Forums including this one. Come to conclusion, I decided to start from the most basic recovery, thru WINDOWS  installation CD/DVDs. But it was beyond recognition by BOTH Windows (perhaps because I formatted BOTH WINDOWS under NTFS and LINUX uses a FAT12 instead ) which brought me to next STEP..

    I downloaded Hiren's CD 10.4, run em and added several other recovery softwares into USB stick...

    Long story short, I managed to retrieve VISTA completely, leaving the XP unresolved, so I retraced back to STEP 1 THEN 2

    NOW, using various well known recovery softwares such as EasyBCD , Partition & Mount, etc to restore XP haven't changed my luck a bit..

    Initially, it showed that NTLDR is not present, So I did paste all the files into C; & D: ( C: Vista ; D: XP, which was reversed automatically by Vista after installation, being the 2nd partition)

    I even try to do Repair Installation via CD but it returned to null...

    because  ACCESS IS DENIED!

    So I resetted Admin pwd and so on...

    Then, after being able to log on, tried again then it showed : Stop Error 0xc0000218, registry hive can not load...  system32..../SAM after REBOOTING..

    Hence I followed the online instructions to MANUALLY CHANGE  registry by using recovery console of XP CD.. but only managed 2 get to STAGE 1...

    because after REBOOTING ... it just went BLANK!

    EVEN  when I tried to do a Repair Installation, I just was not presented w/ 1 anymore..

    I then go to edit those lines under Vista and restart to find this problem:

    Windows could not start because: \Windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt...

    then I rename it under XP Recovery mode..

    Now it always reboot in loop whenever I tried to log in to XP, no access whatsoever to Safe mode ,etc (even when I depress F8 while it booted)

    Vista is working fine...

    What should I do next?

    Please HELP!!!

    I have a Very Important software that is IRREPLACEABLE in terms of value and it has SERIOUS imcompatiblity issue w/ upgraded / advanced versions of Windows ( Vista or 7) other than XP.

    Can anybody provide me w/ a MORE IN-DEPTH DETAILED SOLUTIONS (like a walkthrough / cheats to uncover certain upgrades in Games.. ??  ;) ) to recover my XP??
