APPLICATION ERROR

I lost all sound on my computer.  When I try to click on the sound volumn icon on my desk top I get the following error message:

 SNDVOL32.EXEC APPLICATION ERROR

The application failed to initalize properly(0xc0000005)

I have already downloaded new sound drivers off the internet but that didn't fix the problem.

Any ideas out there?  Pleae help..........  I need my sound back on.

WELL GLORY HALALUYA, I'VE GOT SOUND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Here's what I did:  Restarted my computer in safe mode and clicked on "Last Known Configuration that Worked."  I then reloaded new sound drivers again (REALTECK AC97) and low and behold sound came back............

That's all I know. 

We'll see how long it last but for now I am one happy camper !

Again my personal thanks to each and every one of you who contributed to this post.  If I could I'd buy you all a beer !

    Well everyone, I think I've found the problem, but sorry to say that there seems to be no solution. It turns out that it is related to the codec tweak tool found in the K-Lite codec pack. I just got curious and tried it before testing the .net framework 4.0 beta 2 again, and at least I know that it isn't that (sorry Microsoft for the accusation).

    It was either: The Various tweaks feature, the Audio configuration, or the Detect broken codecs and filters, other fixes. After applying those, I went straight to my scanner, yahoo messenger, then the volume control. The error showed up. I'm about to do another new installation now. If a solution shows up at the main forum for that application, I will post it. From now on I will use the Backup or restore setting option in the tool.

    I'm getting the same problem here. So including me we are with four of us now? I luckily have sound, but the volume isn't adjustable anymore. I have recentely installed a codecs pack but I don't think this is the problem. I also recently installed skype and a webcam. The sound system I have is VIA audio. Off course I tried all hopefull solutions but those worked for me the same as they did for you, not. I will continue checking this forum and hopefully our Microsoft guru will come up with a solution. Happy new year.

    This is also our issue. I have no idea what originally caused it...but we have Windows XP and the volume does work, but whenever I click to adjust volume I get this error message (here in its entirety): "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application." This wasn't a big deal, as I could right click and get into the properties and adjust volume this way, as well as use the volume button on my laptop. However, my husband just got a microphone for Christmas and cannot record. I think this is related to this issue. Mary, are you still out there? I have looked all over the internet for someone with a similar issue, and this is the closest I've gotten. Please help, if you can. Thanks!

    I just went ahead and did a new installation. This time I didn't install the .net framework 4.0 beta 2, and things haven't messed up yet. On that note, though, I'm starting to think that it may have been me clearing either the Recent Documents or the Temporary Files with the latest version of CCleaner, or even using the fix broken audio with the latest K-Lite codec pack.

    I haven't used any of those this time either, so I'm not really sure now, and I don't want to go and take a risk on testing it, because I'm worried that I might have to do a new installation again.
