APPLICATION ERROR

I lost all sound on my computer.  When I try to click on the sound volumn icon on my desk top I get the following error message:

 SNDVOL32.EXEC APPLICATION ERROR

The application failed to initalize properly(0xc0000005)

I have already downloaded new sound drivers off the internet but that didn't fix the problem.

Any ideas out there?  Pleae help..........  I need my sound back on.

WELL GLORY HALALUYA, I'VE GOT SOUND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Here's what I did:  Restarted my computer in safe mode and clicked on "Last Known Configuration that Worked."  I then reloaded new sound drivers again (REALTECK AC97) and low and behold sound came back............

That's all I know. 

We'll see how long it last but for now I am one happy camper !

Again my personal thanks to each and every one of you who contributed to this post.  If I could I'd buy you all a beer !

    The Codec Tweak Tool option to "Fix broken sound" causes this problem.  It does two things.  (1) It sets HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32, 'aux' string value to "C:\Windows\System32\wdmaud.drv".  I think 'aux' should be set to "wdmaud.drv".  (2) It creates a new, I believe unnecessary, string value named 'wdmaud.drv' set to "C:\Windows\System32\wdmaud.drv".

    I am not sure how to contact the author of Codec Tweak Tool.  Perhaps someone else will have better luck with that.

    Wow thank you for pointing this out and everyone else who tested and gave their additions. I've been hacking online for the past 48 hrs for a solution to this, and it did fill my suspicions that it was related to applying the Codec Tweak Tool, was able to use audio mixer from taskbar by switching the aux reg value back to wdmaud.drv.

    If you don't mind sharing, how do you monitor registry changes made by a certain app, like the Codec Tweak Tool? I mean if it involves using another app, then it would help me self-troubleshoot a lot of these registry-related errors that pop up once in a while. Otherwise, that is some fierce work.

    Hi - I stumbled across this forum while trying to fix the sndcol32.exe application error. I just wanted to say thanks, this fix worked straight away. I had suspected the K-lite installation I did recently may have done something but uninstalling had no effect and I was starting toi run out of hair to pull out or pets to kick!
