APPLICATION ERROR

I lost all sound on my computer.  When I try to click on the sound volumn icon on my desk top I get the following error message:

 SNDVOL32.EXEC APPLICATION ERROR

The application failed to initalize properly(0xc0000005)

I have already downloaded new sound drivers off the internet but that didn't fix the problem.

Any ideas out there?  Pleae help..........  I need my sound back on.

WELL GLORY HALALUYA, I'VE GOT SOUND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Here's what I did:  Restarted my computer in safe mode and clicked on "Last Known Configuration that Worked."  I then reloaded new sound drivers again (REALTECK AC97) and low and behold sound came back............

That's all I know. 

We'll see how long it last but for now I am one happy camper !

Again my personal thanks to each and every one of you who contributed to this post.  If I could I'd buy you all a beer !

    Could try:

    1. Complete uninstall of Realtek AC97 sound and revert to Windows sound drivers.

        Clean Boot deal includes temporarily doing this.

    1. Boot Windows using Safe Boot options (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222)  Instead of F2 or F12 press F8.

        I see  a point in trying Last Known Configuration or Enable Boot Logging.

    1. Check if any 64-bit only drivers or programs.  Do only 32bit or only 64bit games work?
    2. Buy and install Windows Xp 64-bit SP2.  Unlike Intel, your AMD64 would still run anything 32bit just fine.

    Did exactly as you said Ashton but still no sound.  I'm at my ropes end.  At least I'm not getting that sorry error message anymore.

    Thanks for your input.  If you can think of anything else please let me know.

    You shouldn't need to delete any registry values or do anything with .NET.

    Try this:

    Open notepad or wordpad and copy and paste these 8 lines (courtesy of EasyFix):

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]

    "midimapper"="midimap.dll"

    "wavemapper"="msacm32.drv"

    "wave"="wdmaud.drv"

    "mixer"="wdmaud.drv"

    "midi"="wdmaud.drv"

    "aux"="wdmaud.drv"

    Then save the file as soundfix.reg, close notepad, then double click that file, OR right click and select merge.  Done.

    OK.  Here's what I see when I open "Add Remove Programs."

    Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

    Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2

    Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1

    Net Framework 2.0 would not delete quote : "cannot un-install because it will affect other applications that are installed."

    So couldn't remove Net Framework 2.0

    So, decided I woud go ahead and try you solution anyway,

    Maybe I should try the fix suggested by "EASYFIX"  I'm just not sure where to begin.  **Need speicfic instructions like FAIZZ gave us in his solution.**Many thanks everyone..............
