My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

same issue on totally unrelated hardware:

    mobo asus P5KC

"pro" audio interface: TC electronics Studio Konnekt 48, connected in firewire.

and a totally unrelated toshiba laptop....

Happens in WDM mode only, not when working in in ASIO.

    • "randomly" happens after 3/4hrs playback
    • usually happens when a system update or equivalent is run
    • if sampling frequency is at something else than 44.1kHz audio falls back to it, causing severe dropouts as the unit is still in 88.2 / 96kHz.
    • usually rerunning audio configuration & cycling sample rates restores sounds / stops glitches / restores sample frequencies issues.

I have a Asus P7P55 LX motherboard. I'm not sure what you mean by "inbox HD Audio class driver installed".

    In device manager I have:-

    ATI HDMI Audio (realtek 6.0.1.6034)

Via High Def Audio (VIA 6.0.1.7400)

    does that help at all?

    Regards

I have the latest Creative drivers properly installed. The problem occurs both with these drivers and when I roll back to previous drivers.

My symptoms are the same as others; the timing appears random and may happen during a game, while listening to itunes, while idle, or on startup on rare occasions.

If I go to playback devices it will show the volume level on my speakers pulsing up and down, indicating to me that it should be working, but nothing comes out of the speakers.

On startup after restarting to correct the problem, if the speakers are left on at startup they will "pop" quite loudly when windows starts.

As one other member mentioned, itunes seems to realize that something is wrong and is reluctant to start playing a song, and does not seem to progress properly when started.

Frequently if I attempt to continue use of the computer without restarting it will go unresponsive; I will be able to move my mouse but not effect anything with mouse or keyboard. Shortly thereafter the mouse pointer will freeze as well, necessitating a hard restart.

I run Bitdefender but am currently scanning with Malwarebytes on your advice.

I have the same problem at my office.  We have mostly XP computers, but we have a few Win7 Enterprise Computers.  A couple of them will just lose audio after a random period of time and we will have to reboot.  They have the latest drivers for the audio cards in the laptops, but we are using Logitech USB headsets, so I think that they do not use the onboard audio card?  Would they use some other driver then?  There are no drivers from Logitech for them, so is it some internal Win7 driver that is used for a USB headset?
