My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

    Similar problem - Win7SP1 x64 Pro

Restarting audiosrv does not help, but disable/enable "High definition audio device" fixes problem- for awhile.

Happens maybe once/month. Machine is rarely shut down, always use sleep/wake.

    Audio Driver says Microsft v6.1.7601.17514

Interesting side note- when in the not working state, the Sound control panel does not show "Speakers" item. It shows "Headphone", but in a "Not Plugged In" status (I don't have headphones, but I do have a speaker.)

When I get the sound working again thru Device Manager, the Speakers shows up again as the Defualt Device.

When it was not working, I tried unpliugging and replugging the speaker 3.5mm plug into various audio jacks. Nothing helped. Then plugged into the normal green jack, used device manager and it works- temporarily.

    Hi everyone!

I've been getting reports about loss of audio playback on Win7 for quite a while now.

On the only occasion I could see such a system when playback had died myself I tried a few things and now I'm wondering if the same behaviour occurrs on other machines too.

The machine was using a USB sound device (Philips Speechmike) at that moment.

When playback had stopped, recording of audio still worked.

Opening the playback devices and testing the audio device didn't even start. That is to say: The volume display next to the audio device didn't show any green bars. When I right-clicked on the audio device again, I could only stop the audio test (this menu option is usually not visible because testing the audio system hardly takes enough time to open the menu twice).

At this state, no application trying to playback audio can do so. It's like opening the audio playback system doesn't return so that the application cannot start sending audio buffers...

One way we could fix sound playback was to open the properties for the audio device, go to the "Erweiterungen"-Tab (sorry, don't know what exactly it's called in english windows versions, probably "Extensions") and toggle the checkbox to disable all extensions twice (i.e. returning to the same state it were).

After that, audio playback worked again just like before.

When your audio playback stops, can you still test audio playback in the playback devices control panel?

    Regards,

    mav

Updating the sound driver did fix this same problem in my computer. You can also automate the driver update process of your computer by installing a 3rd party software that does that like RadarSync.
