Just for information purposes, I recently was staying in a hotel with wireless internet. Unfortunately, the WiFi connection would not work so I contacted the hotel's tech support staff. After 30 minutes trying all sorts of things the support staff person instructed me to change certain settings on my laptop that would be "compatible" with the access point." He then proceeded to walk me through changing various settings on my laptop (including the DNS setting mentioned here). What he actually had me do was to "undo" the instruction to "automatically" conform to the DNS setting of the network connection (other than that specific one at that hotel access point). At the time I did not realize how this would cause problems later with other connections. Later when I was back at home, and at other locations with WiFi, I found I was unable to get any connection to a browser (although I was "connected"). I had forgotten about the resetting of the DNS properties before, and not until I read this thread did I realize that was the problem. When I went back to reset DNS to automatic I had no further problems. Finally, after many hours of trying to figure this out I had a simple solution. Word to the wise: when contacting tech support at WiFi locations (such as hotels) be very wary of "solutions" that might be proposed for connection problems, especially if they involve changing settings on your laptop.
