·        What is the Operating System installed on your computer?

Along with TaurArian`s suggestions, also see if the following steps help.

Step 1:

a.       Run Windows Update troubleshooter and check if it helps. (For Windows 7)

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter

b.      Try to reset the Windows Update Components and see if it helps. Refer the below mentioned article for the same. (For Windows Vista and XP)

How do I reset Windows Update components?

**Step 2:**If this does not help, try installing the updates in a clean boot state and see if it helps. To do so, follow these steps.

a.       Click Start, type “msconfig.exe” (without quotes) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

b.      On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

c.       On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all. Click OK, and then click Restart. Install the updates after the restart.

**Note:**Make sure you put the computer back to Normal Startup once updates finish installing.

I tried a lot of "solutions" only this works.

It worked on:

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bits.

My problem was that I update windows on May 12, 2015. And it give me back an error and did not install 6 updates. There was like 35 updates. With the others I got no problem. But since that I couldn't update anymore, until now. Thank you.

Windows XP -

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Click Stop.

Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:

a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.

b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.

c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Click Start.

Starting the service will take a moment.

80070057 - ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. Third party service which is running in the computer creating the problem. Please do a clean boot and then install the updates.

Before we proceed, please backup the Registry.
1. Click Start, type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter.
2. Select My Computer (the root node) in the left pane, click Export under the File menu, choose All under Export range, select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save.
Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.
1. Click Start, type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter.
2. Locate the following key in the left pane:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft]
1. Highlight “Microsoft” folder and click "Delete".
2. Please repeat to delete the following keys:

I was trying to upgrade my grandson's 8.1 system. Had all the problems. First, wouldn't download windows 10 upgrade at all. Finally got it downloaded by deleting the system distribution folder content, then forcing the update with wuauctl.exe /downloadnow command. At that point it downloaded a 5GB file that failed when prepare for installation began. Then did the Windows Update diagnostic utility that fixed register values and other stuff in the Update system, forced the download again with wuauctl and it downloaded an 8GB file this time. Looked like it was going to work, but failed after a lot of processing at the end of the "preparing for install" after the actual download phase of the Download Windows 10, this time with a new error code. Then, did a DISM (Deployable Image Servicing and Management tool) restorehealth to the system image, deleted out the system distribution folder content again, forced the download again with wuauctl which now downloaded a 10GB file. I had to leave since I had to do other things, but a couple of hours later my grandson reported he was actually in the Windows 10 actual installation phase (past Windows Update, download and preparing for installation). Victory!

So if you have had a lot of trouble especially after following all the suggestions you can find online I would do the following (got this through all of everyone else's notes and attempts to give solution for the problem and then doing them in an order):
1. Make sure all the normal updates have been installed (Check Updates in Windows Update) and install the important ones. (1-2 hours if you have not been keeping up)
2. Display the update history. Click on the link to the Window Updates diagnostic utility link found in the paragraph above the list of updates. This will initiate a download of the diagnostic via a web-page. Diagnostic should be running after the download (possibly hidden behind all the open windows). Click on Repair Windows Update service line and Repair BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) line in the diagnostic tool. You will have to do it twice since you can't select both of them. This means go back to the web page download list and re-run the downloaded tool for the second time. on the service you still have to "fix".
3. Go to Command Prompt in Administrator (right click the start icon at the bottom of the page) and run DISM (Deployable Image Servicing and Management tool) at the screen prompt: "Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" (note the spaces) which will take some time to complete and will check and replace corrupted system files in your system image.
4. Use File Explorer to delete out all files in the "This PC > OS(C:) > Windows > SoftwareDistribution > Download"
5. In Command Prompt for Administrator run "wuauctl.exe /downloadnow which will force the Windows 10 download.
6. Windows 10 download and prepare for install runs upon #5's prompt.
7. Windows 10 install starts automatically after prepare for install phase finishes in #6.
This all takes time. #1 - 1 hour, #2 - 30 minutes, #3 - 1 hour, #4 - 5 minutes, #5 - 5 minutes, #6 - 1-2 hours for the download and prepare for install. Actual Windows 10 install - 2 hours.

If this doesn't work maybe you will have to do a clean (non-free) install of Windows 10. I was going to next see if creating a Media Center CD of this would help (get past the Windows Update process that way) if I couldn't get the Update process to work, but (thank you Lord) I didn't have to figure this out (I think it is easy but after 10-12 hours of trying to get the download to work I was more than happy to stop investigating).
