Microsoft Edge closes immediately upon opening. I've tried many fixes none work.

Yesterday, I wanted to clean up my favorites in Edge (remove duplicates, remove obsolete links). In the midst of this, Edge closed without warning or error message. When I restarted Edge, it closed immediately. I could not select the three dots in the top right. It closed too quickly.

I found several possible solutions including tools in the Settings/Apps menu, other fixes involving removing and then reinstituting the %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory

None of these fixes worked.

When I restart Edge, it closes immediately.

How can I get it to work properly?

    This sounds the most useful so far! Thank you. The steps you list don't appear, but I managed to navigate to the last stage - only to find Modify was greyed out and inactive (as, incidentally was uninstall). So near and yet so far!

    Repair Microsoft Edge as instructed below:

    1. Open Start and select "Settings > Apps > Apps & features";
    2. Look for Microsoft Edge and select it;
    3. Select the "Modify" button;
    4. At the confirmation screen, select "Repair".

    See if MS Edge will open stable.

    I just tried "Repair" edge and it still shuts off after 2-3 seconds?

    Renaming the "User Data" to "User Data.old" has the same effect as deleting it.

    I found no reason to keep the old ones. I had 6 or 7 ".old" folders and they were just taking up space.

    It's important to kill any open MSEdge.exe instances in Task Manager-Details before deleting the "User Data" folder.

    Edge will recreate the "User Data" folder after you re-open it, but as I suggested, you need to sync your Microsoft

    and Google accounts to restore your favorites after you delete the original.

    1. Press Crtl + right-click on the Edge icon.
    2. Select the New window option.

    Opened as normal. Why? No idea!
