How to prevent video autoplay in Chromium Edge

Hi

I've upgraded to chromium edge but now videos are autoplaying again. I had this disabled on classic Edge but can't work out how to do this on the new version.

I've set "Media autoplay" to "Limit" in the "Site Permissions" section of settings but this doesn't seem to have had any effect at all (yes, I've restarted Edge / Windows).

I had also had this problem with dev / beta builds of Edge but hadn't got around to chasing it up until it became my primary browser.

In particular it's annoying on the MSN new pages linked to from the new tab page in Edge when they all have autoplaying video.

Why isn't there an option called "Block"?

You'll probably find that the block option has to be enabled. Copy the next line into the address bar and press Enter:

edge://flags/#edge-autoplay-user-setting-block-option

Once this flag is enabled, you should see Block on the autoplay options menu.

I would suggest you refer to the below steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Copy edge://flags/ and paste it to the browser's address bar.
  3. Type 'Show block option in autoplay settings' and set it to 'Enable'.
  4. Copy edge://settings/profiles and paste it to the browser's address bar.
  5. Type 'Media autoplay' click it.
  6. Set it to 'Block'.
  7. Restart your computer, and when it boots up, check to see whether or not the problem has been resolved.

I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 3 year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

In the new Microsoft Edge, the option of automatic playback is limited.

However, you can install an extension like autoplayblocker from the Chrome web store to disable Autoplay. (You may have to enable extensions from other store).

    You mean just like how they pay attention to the feedback about updates and rebooting? Yeah right!

    We're all having to fight against the ridiculous 'mother knows best' policy that has taken over any innovation at Redmond and use long winded workarounds to get their products working - either that or move on.

    The thing that bothers me with this issue is we a huge crowd of people have let Microsoft know about the flaws with edge yet they don't seem to be fixing it, i would like to know why this is and when it's going to be fixed as like so many others ill be moving to firefox too, I can stop video autoplay with HTML5 block autoplay extensions but I should not need to, Microsoft is it not the time you got your thumb out of your behind and fix this.

Feedback goes straight to the Edge team and forms the basis for their future work.     If you examine the current table, you'll see this item:

    This means that the feature will be released for testing in the insider previews then, and all being well added to the public stable version soon afterwards.
