New Edge: "Your browser is managed by your organization"

I just (06-08-2020) installed the latest Windows release and updated to the new Edge as well. When I went to change settings in the Edge browser, I noticed that my browser is all of a sudden managed by "your organization". Well, my organization is me!

Can anyone explain why I see the message "Your browser is managed by your organization" when trying to adjust settings? I did not give any permission for anyone to "manage my organization." I had this problem with Google Chrome and wound up deleting the browser altogether.

I was able to remove this by opening my Webroot SecureAnywhere Advanced Settings. Like others have said, this is something that blocks websites Webroot has identified as malicious but the steps below should remove the things in Edge you're seeing.

  1. Open the Webroot security program.
  2. Click the Advanced Settings Cog at the top right.
  3. Click Firewall / Web Shield at the left hand side.
  4. Uncheck "Activate Browser Extensions"
  5. Save
  6. Close and reopen Edge and the Extension is gone and so are those policies/management messages.

    Thanks @jameswolfe3! That helps. As indicated in these pages, "some external entity" caused the "ExtensionInstallForcelist" policy to be set to install the "Web Threat Shield" extension. This is what we attempt to convey through the catch-all "your organization" phrase - which reflects the major genuine use case.

    From your posts, I'm guessing this external entity probably edited the Windows registry directly to "set" this policy. The Windows registry location for this is documented here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-policies#extensioninstallforcelist

    Do you know what could have caused this extension to be installed on the system? For example, do you have any of the "SecureAnywhere" suite of products from WebRoot installed on this machine? If so, that product *may* have installed this. Here's an example of such an issue being raised for Chrome from back in Nov 2016: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1942346-webroot-browser-extension (search for the word "clandestine" in that page). To mitigate this, you will have to lookup that product's documentation or contact that vendor to remove the force installed extension.

    Sorry that the browser is surprising you with that message @jameswolfe3! Lets try figuring out the core issue here.

    Could you please navigate to edge://policy page in a new tab? Does that show any entries? Also does edge://management page show anything other than the standard text about the browser being managed by an organization?

    Also, could you please share screenshots of these pages?
