Bit Locker Recovery Key Requested at Boot Time

Hi,

At the weekend our two Surface 2 devices got a firmware update installed. My Surface 2 updated and rebooted fine with no issues.

But my wife's Surface 2 (64GB model) asked for the Bitlocker Recovery key at boot after the update, and now every time it reboots. Although I have the key this is very poor end user experience.

Especially as I am trying to sell her the Surface 2 over an iPad.

Any assistance in this would be most welcome.

Hi,

Microsoft released an update for this today, for Surface 2 devices, as reflected in KB article 2921482.  Please check for Windows updates and install the latest updates.

Here's how to check for updates manually:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.   (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update. 

Step 3: Tap or click Check now. 

Step 4: If there are updates available, tap or click View details. 

Step 5: Tap or click to select the ones you want to install, and then tap or click Install.  You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.

    I don't think it's low battery as such - my Surface wasn't flat either time. It was the Windows Update restart. That's a full restart, similar to full power off after a flat battery and both will take RT through the full power cycle and OS/driver load instead of the usual restart which caches drivers, so it might be related to the power *state*. I also have inquiries in with Microsoft and will report back anything I hear.

    Thanks. The battery info was more for preventative measures. As you stated, anything that can cause a real power reboot. I stated as you did the reasoning behind the issue, but not as eloquent as you in previous posts.

    The case as it stands appears to be prevent the issue as this big will only be fixed after a patch/update to the firmware.  Until then, we are all trying to avoid it.

    Tony, bitlocker drive encryption is not an option in control panel. Please get back to us with a solution. I suffer random reboots that ask for bitlocker keys and also regular reboots sporadically require the key. I don't want to also have that available to use my device. Have been to windows store, they were unable to deactivate.

    I do not think bitlocker can be turn off on Windows rt devices. I will verify myself later. I personally would not and will not turn off bit locker... But I understand the frustration most are facing here... Are you letting the power drain? A few us us on the board are thinking this may have something to do with it...

     

    I am going to pass the information on this forum to another enthusiast forum with "connections"  for help later today.

     

     

    K, so I reached out to Daniel Rubino of Mobile Nations/WindowsPhoneCentral.com who stated that hehad the same issue.  He also has had previous contact on the issue and according to Tom Warren of TheVerge/WinRumors, Microsoft is aware of the issue and a patch is on the way.  Hopefully this patch will be coming soon as I am sitting in front of the screen of my surface 2 with this issue for the 3rd time...

    Interestingly enough, it happed after I let it sit in the bag for almost a week without charging it...  So,a dead battery is most certainly looking like one of the contributors to this problem like the firmware updates are...
