Surface 2 pro charger issue

I've had my surface for a few months now and, yesterday I left it on the bed while on and charging, due to being  in a rush. One hour later I return and the rectangular charging box is untouchably hot but my surface is still able to charge. I unplug it and let it cool down and as I am about to use it again it still charges normally, a few minutes later I remove it and reinsert and it stops charging. I've tried everything on the help page but still no luck. I know current is passing through because when I plug if in the rectangular box gets warm but as soon as I attach the magnetic connector, no luck! I know it's attached because it's snaps as usual.

Hi FatimaSy,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! We appreciate you taking the time to consult this issue with us. I’m sorry to hear that your Surface is not charging properly. I can tell you are worried about this situation and it is completely understandable. Please know we will do our best to help and guide you in the right direction.

First, please try to verify if the problem is with the Surface or the adapter.  Check from different outlets and locations. Take a look at the charging port and the tip of the adapter, see if there is any debris or corrosion. If you can, try your charger with a different Surface, and a different charger with yours. If you can get your charger to work with a different device, the problem may be with your Surface. If your Surface starts taking a charge from a different charger, your charger may be malfunctioning.

Second, we suggest you try a two button restart (only useable on Pro and Pro2 devices):

  • Power off the Surface Pro
  • Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
  • Release buttons
  • Wait 5-10 seconds
  • Power on the Surface

Additionally, we also suggest you follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the next support article:

•Before you begin

•Solution 1: Remove and reconnect the power supply

•Solution 2: Check the battery charging status

•Solution 3: Restart Surface

•Solution 4: Two-button shutdown (Surface Pro models only)

If the issue persists after trying the steps mentioned above we suggest you contact Technical Support by visiting our Self Service Center here or contact Support **here**.

We hope this information proves useful. Keep us posted!

We are always here to help!

Best Wishes,

i uninstalled the battery drivers from the device manager, shut down my surface and unplugged it for around 15 minutes. i plugged it back in and left it turned off for about another 15 minutes. i turned it back on and it was fully charged. i was thinking it may have just been some sort of display error, but the machine was shutting down whenever i would unplug it, so i don't know. hopefully that problem is solved.

the touchpad is still sketchy at times, however. :/

Hi FatimaSy,

Thanks for your kind and prompt reply!

If your Surface starts taking a charge from a different charger, your charger may be malfunctioning indeed. Now, if your charger works with a different Surface, the problem may be with your Surface.

You might want to try visiting the nearest Microsoft Store in your area, in order to test this. If this is not possible for you, the next step would be visiting our Self Service Center here or contacting Technical Support **here**.

We hope this helps!

Best Wishes,

    Hi Alexandra,

Firstly, it is NOT necessary to uninstall battery drivers, as far as I can tell. Other than that, follow the procedure Bryan suggested and you will probably be okay, at least temporarily: 1) Shut down 2) Unplug and wait 15 minutes 3) Plug in (still turned off) and wait another 15 minutes 4) Turn on (still plugged in). You will probably find that your battery icon is now reporting "fully charged" [and not charging].

I agree that it would be helpful (!) if a MS rep would chip in on this thread -- John1F where are you??  --  to let us know what's happening. Apparently (from other threads) MS is aware of the issue, created by an update mid-December, and expects to be able to fix it with an update "after the holidays" (plural; i.e. in early January 2014).

I had the problem twice; have not had it again in the last approx 5 days. Please check that you have all updates, as there was a System Hardware Update 2013-12-24 which may have included a temporary fix.

I also paid $1500 for my Surface Pro 2, and would have preferred not to have this -- let's agree about the obvious:  minor issue.  In all other respects my machine has been outstanding, and I'm confident we'll get this fixed and move on, happily.

This is unhelpful. Obviously, this is a problem many users are having. There should be a systematic fix to this that does not require users to uninstall the battery drivers. Particularly when the devices at issue, like mine, are less than  one mont into operation. My battery power at 1% and reports that it's plugged in but is not charging - it's been doing this for days. I have unplugged it, preformed a full system restart, it let it sit unplugged, plugged it back in, and started again and the matter what I do it cannot take a charge. Very very frustration on a $1500+ device. The response to this issue, or lack there of is more frustrating.
