Some keys on my type cover are not working, is that problem common?

I've got a brand new type cover for my Surface pro and straight out of the box some keys are not working I think it's a hardware issue, I've also heard that this is a common defect and I'm afraid to exchange for a new one worrying to get another one with defect. If you do have the type or the touch cover for how long has been working so far?

Thank you very much.

Hi there Rsegecin.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with your Type Cover. It does sound as though you need a replacement. Before setting up an exchange, a few steps you could try include:

  1. Ensure all updates are installed
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the Type Cover several times
  3. Open a Word document (or something you can type in) and repeatedly press the keys that are not currently working

If after trying those troubleshooting steps, you still do not have any luck, you can set up an exchange through our Online Service Center.

I hope that helps. Let us know!

Greetings FrankPJB,

Thank you for following up. With the information you've given, I'd recommend going ahead and putting in for an exchangeon your cover, as there may be a physical connection issue at the connector.

Also, please only use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to clean your Keyboard or Surface connections.

Greetings Kodopan,

Sorry to hear that your Type cover stopped responding. The method you were referring to was called "Advanced Exchange." Currently the feature has been disabled.

You may be able to contact a support agent via Chat or Phone here.

I have tried a variety of surfaces. It really depends on what has happened to the keyboard in the moments before I start using my Surface. Right now it is working properly on a hard surface, but on other days it has not worked in exactly the same position.

Last night it worked while I had it on my lap, but not when it was on a hard surface.

I have been careful to clean the contacts with a pencil eraser (and remove the rubber shavings afterwards), and also to check the contact between the keyboard and Surface. Surely having one of the pins losing contact would be much less selective than just the 3 and v keys?

As I said in my original post, gently twisting the keyboard (but not the strip in contact with the Surface) will make the keys start working again ... and then twisting it the other way will make them fail.
