Some keys on my type cover are not working, is that problem common?

I've got a brand new type cover for my Surface pro and straight out of the box some keys are not working I think it's a hardware issue, I've also heard that this is a common defect and I'm afraid to exchange for a new one worrying to get another one with defect. If you do have the type or the touch cover for how long has been working so far?

Hi there Rsegecin.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with your Type Cover. It does sound as though you need a replacement. Before setting up an exchange, a few steps you could try include:

Ensure all updates are installed
Disconnect and reconnect the Type Cover several times
Open a Word document (or something you can type in) and repeatedly press the keys that are not currently working

If after trying those troubleshooting steps, you still do not have any luck, you can set up an exchange through our Online Service Center.

Are you able to use a different cover or that cover on another device without this issue? If you believe the Type Cover to be damages, you can visit our Self Service Center or contact our support team.

Thank you for following up. With the information you've given, I'd recommend going ahead and putting in for an exchangeon your cover, as there may be a physical connection issue at the connector.

Also, please only use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to clean your Keyboard or Surface connections.

Sorry to hear that your Type cover stopped responding. The method you were referring to was called "Advanced Exchange." Currently the feature has been disabled.

I found it was circuitry and not individual keys - I noticed the malfunctioning behavior would be different if caps lock was on or shift was depressed for example and sometimes the keys would generate the incorrect letter so did not appear to be related to the key itself. If you can find temporary air conditioning, then leave the keyboard in there until it works then wrap in saran wrap which you can type through before taking outside. Or soak in fairly pure alcohol (say isopropyl alcohol) which is non-conductive and is one way of fixing a mobile phone that has been dropped in water - then wrap in saran wrap? Or apply light heat over a period of time to re-evaporate the condensed water - just not too hot. Any pressurized air or other non-conductive gas available? Just grabbing at straws here.
