No idea why microsoft does not give any comments on this issue. i bought new type cover as i thought old one spoiled but now new one stopped working either. really frustrating. I have made a mistake to buy this product now really want to get rid off it.
Surface Pro 4 Jul 2017 Update - Type Cover not working
I updated the latest update Jul 2017 and it bricks my type cover completely. Tried everthing, from reset, volume + and power, everthing including cleaning etc.
I just do not understand. When I did Apr 2017 update, it also half bricked it, but at least using volume+ and power helps, but now totally unusable.
If anyone come across, this, please help.

2019-12-18T00:52:25+00:00 I had an extended warranty on my Surface so finally took the trouble to contact the insurers and have it taken away for 'repair'. (I bought a cheap but effective laptop in the meantime to keep us going).
The repair company obtained a new type cover from Microsoft and returned the Surface today. At the moment all is working fine - I've been using it for the last hour. But I'm not holding my breath, and will still never buy a Microsoft computer again.
It was easiest to buy a new Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard to go with my Logitech Bluetooth Mouse. My current sentiment is to buy the least expensive brand of tablet/laptop that meets my needs. That way when I have a problem; I back it up, buy a new one, restore the back up and take a sledge hammer to the old one so no one has a problem with it again! No warranties, no FAQs, just Satisfaction!

2019-11-07T23:16:51+00:00 That would be so cool if it worked. For me (Surface Pro 3, Win10, 1903) this does not help. When I first thought I had a solution I figured out running out of battery by 100% killed the keyboard again. Never, ever brought it back to life. Even bought another Type cover, a but the new one, of course, doesn't work either.
Thanks for sharing, though! Hopefully it helps some other disappointed customers. :-(

2019-11-07T16:20:59+00:00 I have just re-confirmed my findings. My keyboard didn't work, and I am one of the many others who uses a Surface Pro 3, with a Surface Pro Type Cover Keyboard.
I tried many methods, and assessed many-many guides and 'fixes'. The best and most consistent, proven after 2-3x tries is:
- tilt the surface pro in portrait mode with the keyboard attached.
- disconnect the keyboard
- turn the surface pro in landscape-normal mode.
- connect the keyboard
- wait for a about 3-4 seconds
I have tried this multiple times, and it works. I am currently on Windows 10 Pro, 1809, build 17763.805.
Am glad that I can finally re-use my keyboard and surface pro!

2019-10-28T10:08:35+00:00 I went through the same trouble with my Surface Pro 4 (i5, 8gb). I tried everything people say on all the forums like power cycling, turning typcover port off/on in bios, reattaching, reinstalling windows, reinstalling the whole surface from scratch with the shipped firmware etc etc. The problem always came back till the point when it seemed just like it was dead forever.
MY SOLUTION:
This has worked for me and I cannot guarantee this will work for others but you can try.
Detach TypeCover.
Open up Windows Disk Cleaner. Go to "Clean up System Files" --> Tick the box "Upgrade log files" , "Windows error reports...", "Driver packages", "Old upgrade files", and whatever else you feel is necessary. --> Click OK en wait. --> reboot --> attach TypeCover. --> trusty FN key light should come on and its working again.
There is also a "Windows error reports...", in the standard menu of the Disk Cleanup tool but I'm not sure if that is the same.
SIDENOTE:
This goes without saying but removing windows log files and old updates is not completely without danger so make a backup first.
Also, at the same time I was trying this I also uninstalled almost all HID drivers in the Device Manager (because what the heck), but I don't think this helped because other people have already tried that as well. Your Surface will probably go through an update as soon as you reboot again but that is Ok. It should also install the HID drivers again automatically if you uninstalled them before.
Surface Pro 4 (2015), i5 Skylake 6300U, 8gb, with the 2017 Type Cover
It is always good to hear reports of things that seem to work. The difficulty with this report is causality - I don't understand how deleting trash files could cause the type cover to work. It seems just as likely that all your tests caused a mechanical issue to fix itself (possibly temporarily). Good luck howerver ... :-)
