Constant BIOS Boot on Surface Pro 2

I had just received my SP2 from the Microsoft Store two days ago and decided that I would go out and buy a Bluetooth Mouse. The mouse connected once and failed, then I realised that the Bluetooth of my Surface has stopped functioning completely and I wasn't even able to detect my phone. Therefore I decided to "Refresh" my PC and reset most of the settings back to normal.

However, during this refreshing period, Surface entered the screen below and halted all progress. I played around with it, one way of going around the problem was to "Delete all Secure Boot Keys", "Exit Setup", then it would restart to a red screen, display this page and then I select "Install Default Secure Boot Keys". After that it would reboot like normal.

The problem is that now it would constantly show this screen during boot no matter what I do. Is there a way to fix this without sending my Surface back to Microsoft?

Greetings Mark,

Sorry to hear about your Surface Pro 2 booting into the UEFI. I'd suggest putting your Surface in for exchange using the Self-Service page.

Greetings Juan schinocca,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Surface community. I'm sorry to hear that your Surface Pro 2 will only boot to the UEFI screen. There's a few things we can try to get your Surface Pro 2 to boot back into Windows.

  1. Try the Two-Button Shutdown
  • With your Surface powered off, hold the Volume Up and Power button for 15 seconds. Once 15 seconds have passed, release the buttons. Wait 5 seconds then press the Power button to power on.
  • You can try this option a few times to see if your Surface will boot into Windows
  1. Run the battery completely to zero (0%) by leaving it on the UEFI screen until it shuts off.
  • Once it shuts off, press the Power button to turn it back on until it will no longer power on, give a battery symbol, or even light the screen.
  • Once it will not power on, connect the Power Supply and let it charge then try and power on the Surface Pro 2.

If your Surface powers on and boots into Windows, please download and install this KB.

If you cannot get your Surface Pro 2 to boot into Windows, please contact Surface Technical Support.

Hi Ken645,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Community with your inquiry! We value the time you have taken to post and contribute. I am sorry to hear that you get the UEFI menu every time you power on your Surface Pro 2. I can certainly see why this is confusing and bothersome, so please know I will try my best to assist and guide you in the right direction.

Whenever you need to access the UEFI menu, you must press and hold the volume-up button on your Surface. For this reason, we ask you to please verify and test that the volume-up button on your Surface is not stuck and it is indeed working properly.

You can do several things in order to try this: accessing any video site, playing music to checking if you are indeed able to control the volume properly, and also testing the volume with the Type Cover and without the Cover.

If the volume-up button is working properly, please check the following:

  • Make sure you have all and latest Windows updates installed. Please manually check for updates and install all that are available:
  • **Desktop> Swipe for Charms> Settings> Control panel> Windows update> check for updates> install.**Restart between layers of updates, even if not prompted to.  Restart twice after the last update installs.
  • Additionally, try holding down the "Volume UP" and the "Power Button" at the same time for about 15 to 20 seconds.  It should do a reboot and if no activity, release and 'click' the power button one time.

If the button is indeed stuck, then we suggest you contact our Technical Support Team. Depending on what is most convenient for you, you can:

  1. Open a service request yourself, using our **Online Service Center**
  2. Contact our Technical Support team**here**

I am also including a support article that should be helpful:

We hope this information is useful! Please keep us posted and let us know what happens!

We are here to help and we will be looking forward to your response!

Best Wishes,

Unfortunately I had no success with resolving the issue even with the assistance from Microsoft Technical SPT. Surface PRO has been returned to Microsoft and now awaiting the new one. Hopefully same issue will not occur again?

    Hey folks,

This is something I've experienced a few times. Here's what I've found works (note: make sure to remove anything plugged in to the tablet, excluding the power supply, before following this process):

    Part 1 - Two-button shutdown process

Step 1 - Turn off the Surface; hold the power button for at least 10sec to ensure full shutdown

    Step 2 - Wait at least 10sec

Step 3 - Hold the Volume Up & Power buttons for roughly 15sec (note: the Surface will go through something of a reboot cycle; do not release the buttons until after at least 15sec)

Wait until the Surface boots up. It should load Windows this time. If so, proceed to Part 2

Part 2 - Fixing the American Trends Issue

Step 1 - (Assuming you've logged in to Windows), Swipe in from the right & choose Settings > Change PC Settings

    Step 2 - Select Update & Recovery > Recovery

Step 3 - Advanced Settings is where you'll find what you need to fix the issue. You may need to hit the "Restart" button if that's the only option available to you

Step 4 - Once you hit "Restart" you should be brought to a blue screen that says "Choose an Option". Select Troubleshoot

Step 5 - Select UEFI Firmware Settings (you will need to hit "Restart" again)

Step 6 - Once you're back at everybody's favourite black screen, adjust the options thusly:

    • Trusted Platform Module (TPM) & Secure Boot Control are both ENABLED

    - Delete all secure boot keys > Yes

    • Install all secure boot keys > Yes
    • Exit Setup > Yes

(note: do not expect Step 6 to work if you haven't gone through the entire process as listed above. Simply executing Step 6 without the two-button shutdown & accessing the blue Advanced Settings screen from within Windows is not likely to solve the problem)

When the Surface reboots this time, the logo screen should be normal (not that scary red looking boot screen). You may or may not also be taken to the American Trends screen again. If so, repeat Part 1. The Surface screen should be black, and Windows should load.

This worked for me "permanently" the first time. However, after Refreshing/Restoring, it's likely to happen again, as your tablet is reverted to a previous point in time, before 8.1 and/or important updates.

Let me know if this helps! Would love to see if it works for all.
