UPDATE: Check FlickerGate.com for videos of the problem and to submit your own.

I purchased SP4 device a few months ago and it was working fine for a month. Then I noticed that when the CPU is at its max, the screen flickers a bit. Investigating further revealed that it flickers even if it is setting idle. It does not flicker if at least one of the following thing is done:

  1. A video being played in browser
  2. If I keep the touch screen busy by either taping it or keeping a finger on it
  3. If I use the touchpad
  4. If keyboard is used for typing

This resulted in making the device completely unusable while reading articles or ebooks. I am a developer, most of the time I have to read the code and to do that, I have to constantly keep a finger on the touch pad or the screen. I contacted surface support in October and November and was told that the developers are working on the patch. Looking at the updates the developers are pushing since then, I don't think anyone is even aware of the problem there.

My previous support ticket numbers are:

Just wondering if anyone else had the same problem (and the fix) and if not, what's the procedure for the refund? I will rather go for a mac then sacrificing $2000+ for a dancing screen.

Kind Regards,

Abbas

Hey Everyone,

Creating the best products and experiences for our customers is our top priority.

We have heard your feedback and after careful examination, have determined that a small percentage of Surface Pro 4 devices are exhibiting a screen flicker that cannot be addressed with a firmware or driver update.

To support customers affected by this issue, we will replace eligible Surface Pro 4 devices for up to three years from the date of purchase, free of charge. If you believe your device is experiencing this issue, please visit our Surface Pro 4 screen flicker article for more details.

Anyway, I suggest everyone here with the screen shaking problem to try your luck at your nearest MS store.

The problem with that is, many people outside of US where there are no MS stores are still screwed.

But nice to see that your issue is (kinda) resolved.

Update to my problem.    (Solved it... kinda of)

I have posted on page 84~85 if I remember correctly.   My Surface Pro 4 (Core i5, 8GB, 256GB) was bought on Microsoft.com on 10/28/2015, and I started to use it in November 2015.   In the middle of October 2017 it started to have screen shaking issue and nothing could fix it.  Not even reset to factory default and reinstallation of OS.  Even the boot screen Surface logo shakes.

Three calls to tech support told me I have to pay up $450 to get a refurbished replacement with 90-day warranty.    Or go to the nearest Microsoft Store to see what they might do.

(In my quest for a fix in the last several weeks, I have seen so many people have the same problem without a fix or happy ending.  ONLY 2 people claimed that MS store gave them a brand new Surface Pro 4 even as the warranty had expired.  Most people had to either pay $450 for a refurbished one, or did nothing and stuck with the unusable device).   However, even with only 2 known lucky person, I wanted to try my luck as well.

I drove 5 hours to the nearest MS store last Saturday.  The only one in Michigan.

The manager told me I have two options

    1.   $450 for a refurbished replacement just like the support told me on the phone.

    Or,

    2.   He can buy back my screwed up surface Pro 4 for $389, and then give me a 10% discount on a new device of my choosing.

I declined both offers since I thought both offers were terrible.

Offer #1 is basically totally unacceptable.  To pay $450 to get a used device, just so I can do my work again as usual on a device that can break down any time after the 90-day period?

Even if nothing ever happens to the refurbished device, it is the same as if I am forced to pay $450 just to use my own computer again.  Oh yeah, there is something similar...   Randsomewareanyone???

Offer #2 basically wanted me to pay up $780 + tax  ($826.8 after tax) for a 2017 version of the new device of the same setup (but just the device itself).   Maybe the 2017 version is slightly better, but if my Pro 4 didn't break down on me, I did not need to spend a single cent at all, let alone $826.8 just to be able to use a computer again.

Even if I wanted the upgrade myself, I could have sold my old device for much more than a measly $389 if it did not break down, and I have educational discount for 10% to begin with anyway.   This option#2 is far from good enough for me.   So I declined.

The manager refused to acknowledge this is a common problem.  He said he had never heard of it even after I showed him this thread.  I also showed him Google search of "Surface Pro 4 screen shaking" brought out tons of search results.    He insisted that if it is a common problem, he'd see people coming into the store with this problem very often, but I am the "first one" he saw.   He also said all these posts, news, etc. online including this thread are just "hearsay".   O_O

However, eventually (after nearly 1.5 hours in the store) he agreed to give me a better offer,

He would still buy back my old device for $389, then he would let me have a brand new latest Surface Pro 2017 (of the same setup) for $999 instead of $1299.

So I could get one Surface Pro 2017 (Core i5, 8GB, 256GB) for ($999 + 6% tax - $389) = 669.94 or somewhere around there.   That is about a 50% off for a new device.   So I took this offer.

On the top of that, he offered 50% off for the two-year extended warranty (original price is $150).   I took it and paid extra $75 (do not want to go through it again with serious hardware problem and out of warranty ackwardness)

And when he looked at my old Surface keyboard, he asked if I wanted to trade it in for a new one (for free).    I took the offer too.   New keyboard without paying a cent.  Why not, right?  (Should have brought all my other accessories too).

Now I am out total $745.49 and my old Pro 4 and its keyboard.  Drove another 5 hours back with a brand new Surface Pro 2017 and keyboard.

I would still be very unhappy if I got a brand new Surface Pro 4 of the same setup after paying this much.   The only things cancelled out my unhappiness were the latest version of Surface Pro 2017, brand new, same setup, -$689 discount in total for the device alone.  Free new keyboard, and 50% off for the two-year warranty.    It could be better or worse.  As I have seen the two cases online where people got brand new Surface Pro 4 for free even as theirs were also out of warranty, and there are people who had to pay $450 to get a refurbished replacement.   I guess I am somewhere in the middle between lucky and totally unlucky.

I know... I know... I did not have to spend a single cent if my Surface Pro 4 simply worked as usual... or rather worked as it should.   Life is not fair.  I just took this event as a upgrade to the latest device with a huge discount.   (50% off in total, plus a free keyboard).

The new 2017 Surface Pro is slightly faster than the Surface Pro 4.   Newer generation (7th?  Mine is i5-7300U).  Graphics is Intel HD620 instead of HD520.  Round edge.  No fan, must be better cooling.  My old Surface Pro 4 always had its fan blowing most of the time even when I only had Word and Chrome open.    The new keyboard however, the touch pad click sound is a little loud compare to the keyboard I had for Pro 4.

Anyway, I suggest everyone here with the screen shaking problem to try your luck at your nearest MS store.   Yes, the store managers have the authority to make a decision on site.   And it is probably depended on their mood at the time for most part, plus your insistence and the way you talk to them (do not be rude!).   I told myself if he proposed to a girl that day and got a yes for answer, he might just gave me the new device for free instead of a 50% off.  Oh well, at least he changed his mind after he insisted on his initial offer was the best he could do for me.

    Good luck everyone!
