Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

I am also having the same problem with my Surface Pro 1 and the Touch Cover 1. If I flip back/forward the cover, sometimes the Surface Pro spontaneously reboots. It is not happening 100% of the time, but does happen a few times a day, which is very frustrating. I also have frequent issues throughout the day where the touch cover stops working; sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect it then the Surface Pro reboots as well. I am current on all updates for Windows 8.1.

Same thing has been happening to me.  Particularly when the keyboard is unconnected and reconnected.

I've given up using the 'Type' keyboard. Instead, I'm using a wireless Bluetooth 'Wedge' keyboard, and am no longer getting any problems.

The Wedge keyboard is also of better quality, is more ergonomic in terms of being tilted, and comes with a stand that gives a better screen angle than the Surface Pro's inbuilt kickstand.

All of which raises the question, why didn't Microsoft use the technology from to 'Wedge' keyboard on their Type covers? My belief is that the whole problem with the Type cover relates to the power connector. Connect/Disconnect and twisting of the connector, particularly when used on my lap, appears to be when the issue occurs.

Also, beware of Microsoft's warranty replacement. This seems to be an 'exchange repair', where you're likely to get someone else's repaired kit in exchange for what you send back.

I roll back all uefi firmware driver and the problem goes away son my Surface pro 1 (driver versión from 2006)

I never saw the reboot issue prior to 8.1 and a few FW updates past it.  then again, I'm still not seeing it as a keyboard consequence either, so I'm convinced there are a few related but different failure mechanisms going around. for me, it's always a random reboot with my finger on the touchscreen, just panning or scrolling, whether there is a keyboard attached or not. power kernel error is the only report I get. I did try uploading dump files on the random-reboot thread but as with this one...crickets.

I'm fairly convinced they've managed to introduce some sort of driver conflict between the digitizer and keyboards. perhaps those seeing reboots with keyboard attach or folding actions are having the same issue as the driver allocates and deallocates. another symptom i have is stuck keys... if i go to use the touch cover after a long while without using (although it was attached), a single letter tap to start typing a web address or whatnot starts flooding the field until i yank off the touchpad and reseat it.

 it didn't happen originally so there no doubt is a possible fix...depends on how much effort they're putting into "obsolete" h/w.  I've still been happy enough with my SP1 overall I'd consider a trade-up to an SP3...but I'll wait til i get closer to the end of my purchased coverage to see if they offer one or if i need to bail toward another path. (wife likes the lenovo yoga pro 2 i got her...aside from a random touchpad dying bug that crops up very occasionally...so they too have issues).

between android bugs, camera issues (sony alpha) or easy firmware fixes that never saw daylight, this, and even the high power HP workstations I use at work...nothing these days is bug free. I'm kind of resigned to it all, unfortunately.  sucks but it ain't gonna change now.
