Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots.  Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

Surface | Surface Pro | USB-C

I am also experiencing the same issues.  Surface Pro 1 with Touch Cover 1, upgraded to 8.1.

The keyboard will sometimes become unresponsive, which can usually be resolved by detaching and reattaching the keyboard multiple times.  Sometimes when the keyboard has become unresponsive, the Windows hardware icon on the device stops working.  At that time it is sometimes possible to fix the issue by tapping the modifier keys on the keyboard (I think that Alt may be the culprit, but I tap Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Windows one at a time to try to "unstick" them).  Even more, sometimes the device does not only become unresponsive, but a single letter will stick, repeating the character over and over until the keyboard is detached.  Curiously, at the point the keyboard is detached, the word completes with the remainder of the keys that had been pressed on the keyboard AFTER the stuck key began to repeat.

And then of course there are the sudden reboots, which seem to be related to the keyboard.  They occur especially often when the keyboard is moving.  For example, I frequently picked up the device (with keyboard attached) and turned it around to view the Serial Number, this caused the device to reboot twice.

I hope we can get a statement on whether this is a widespread issue that they can/will address in a software update, or if those who are affected should schedule their device to be serviced.

Microsoft is releasing firmware updates today for all Surface Tablets, including the Surface Pro 1.

No indication that anything addressing this problem is included, though.

But I'll try and be aware, after applying this, if there's any change in frequency of the spontaneous reboots.

But it sure would be nice to get some sort of acknowledgment from Microsoft about this issue, as it's obviously affecting a lot of people.

    Thanks Paul, fingers crossed!

I suppose I could start looking at spinning off a custom UNIX port and bypass Win 8.1.  At least we can fix our own problems that way.

Also happening with my Surface Pro 2 - Touch Cover 2. I was working on a PowerPoint last minute and lost half of it from the reboot. It didn't just happen when attaching the cover though, one time I set it down somewhere, and it just rebooted. I thought it may have been a software issue. but I guess not. Any intense movements seems to crash it.

Customers;  We are having product failures several times a day.

    Microsoft:  Long pause, no answer.

    Repeat as needed.
