Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

Happy to notice that the latest Intel driver also fixed the "no road display" in Map app

You'll need to be running as a local admin. If not do this first:

Right click Start (or press and old with finger) on pop up and choose Command Prompt (Admin), provide admin credentials when prompted then type devmgmt.msc, this will bring up Device Manager as a local admin.

If you're already running as a local admin right click (or press and hold) on Start button, on pop up menu choose Device Manager.

Find and expand the Monitors section, right click on Surface Display and choose uninstall from the pop-up menu. If prompted to restart, don't.

Next find and expand the Display Adapters section, on the Intel graphics item right click and choose uninstall. When prompted to restart, do so.

After computer restarts Windows will reinstall the drivers. It may take a minute or two but hopefully all will be better afterward.

So far, for me, it's been perfect but it hasn't been long, however, black screen issue was a major problem basically every time the SP4 when to sleep.

UPDATE: I don't have Windows Hello enabled, never has been turned on and I have WiFi set to turn off while in sleep (in the modern power settings screen), this keeps the battery drain to a minimum. I've learned this from Windows 8/8.1 days, usually makes a large difference in battery life. Worth the lost features, which in my opinion are minor for non-phone devices.

UPDATE 2, 01-03-2016: Well, the SP4 worked great for a while then.... black screen on startup, repeatedly. Not going to do the new driver until it's available via Microsoft as we support several SP4s and need to find a solution that will not get wiped out with an update. So, I've decided to do even more testing and it seems to be that sleep is not the problem but instead hibernation. I've never had a problem getting the SP4 to wake up from when I know without a doubt that it was sleeping and not hibernating. However, every time I've had a problem it's been in a hibernation state after a sleep state.

My guess is that there's a problem when there's long sleep states before going into hibernation. After a fair amount of testing, using short sleep times and short hibernate after times it has woken up just fine. When I say short time frames I mean short, two minutes before going to sleep and two more minutes before going to hibernation. Set this way it has, so far, woken up without a black screen.

Here's what seems to be working with livable settings.

When plugged in to power I don't allow hibernation at all. With it set this way I haven't had a black screen yet. If I set to long sleep states (default 120 minutes) before going to hibernation I'd often have black screen on coming out of hibernation.

On battery I have short sleep duration set before going to hibernation (5-15 minutes) and I haven't had a problem with the SP4 coming out of hibernation.

I've never had an issue coming out of sleep, that I'm aware of, only hibernation. The main times I've had the black screen issue is after walking away for long periods from a logged on SP4 with default or long sleep times before going into hibernation.

Here's my power settings that have worked so far:

On battery: screen off 5 minutes, sleep in 15 minutes, hibernate after 15 minutes (or less) of sleep mode.

On power (plugged in): screen off in 5 minutes, sleep in 3 hours, hibernate after - never.

The SP4 comes out of hibernation so quick (when there's no black screen) that having short sleep and hibernate after times is a reasonable work around until a permanent fix is found.

Still don't have Windows Hello enabled.

I'll report again as I experiment more. I'd be curious if others find the black screen issue eliminated or reduced after adjusting sleep and hibernate settings similarly.

I have consistently had this problem; my SP4 goes to sleep after some inactivity but then when I try to wake the machine up all I get is a black screen as if it has not come out of sleep.

Like earlier post, I can see power on the keyboard and if I press the volume up/down I get the volume control appear but otherwise I can login from the black screen.

I paid premium $$$ for this and chose it over a Lenovo Yoga for my daughter and the out of box experience has been pretty average; Windows 10 update failed and had unit swapped and this black screen issue is constantly happening.

I hope a fix comes out soon.

You need to manually choose what driver to install. Follow these screens:

And then point the path at the /graphics/ subfolder of the zip archive you downloaded from intel, where the iglh64.inf file is located to install the driver.
