Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    Today, I left the Surface on in the AM, and when I came home from work (power option is that it should be in sleep mode now), and tried to awaken it, it did not want to move from the opening screen.  After about 1 minute, it finally transitioned and took my PIN, but then did not respond well.  Start (windows logo in left corner) did not work.  Edge did not work.  I shut it down with the power button.  Then it did not want to restart.  After several attempts at pressing and holding the power button, it finally restarted. And it did not boot up with any of the start programs (for example, my sticky notes did not appear).  And the Start button did not work again. I right clicked on Start (windows logo in left corner), and was able to restart it, and then it finally booted up properly. 

    One other point...I have it set up with the docking station, and only screen 2 is active (my large screen through the docking station).

    What is going on? I sort of don't trust it to go to sleep.  This is not the first time it did not want to awaken, but it does not happen consistently.

    hi! i got the i5 and had the exact same problem! then i returned it and bought the i7 and same problem..

    the problem is that the surface does not recognize well the keyboard cover and won't wake up from sleep.

    my solution was to  change what closing the lid does.. just change it from sleep to hibernate and problem solved (for me)

    boot time is not as fast  but hey, it's better than no booting at all! :)

    Thank you for your earnest attempt at assistance. As you will see from a careful re-reading of this thread, none of the methods to wake SP4 in the article you cited are working. Hence, there is great concern and frustration amongst the authors of the posts here, who have tried all the solutions suggested in the article and are still left - sometimes in the middle of public presentations - with no recourse but to force an awkward and time-consuming reboot of the machine by holding down the power button.

    It appears that serious power state issues exist with the current iteration of SP4; perhaps these are due to the newness of Skylake and/or other new components in the unit.

    I hope you will consider taking some time to carefully review the posts in this thread and escalate this widespread and significant concern with Microsoft, who is at risk of losing further customers and tarnishing its reputation over this issue.

    Similar issues and very frustrating. Very tough to go into a meeting expecting to take notes in OneNote and the darn thing is all blank screen.  Never have this issue with my laptop (ThinkPad T440s)

    The temporary solution that I have found is to:

    1. connect the Surface to an external monitor (for some reason this still works!)
    2. then select Duplicate screens (swipe from the right hand side of the screen, select Project to get the external monitor setup)
    3. then Extend (I tend to work with an external monitor most of the time) or PC screen only
    4. you're back in business and no reboot necessary!

    Of course, this solution only works if you have access to an external monitor to plug into!

    It seems that this wake up issue kicks the video card into External Screen Only mode.  This happens even if I put the Surface in PC Screen Only mode before closing the cover.

    This is a fundamental issue.  Should be a top priority fix!
