Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

To a MS software engineer, could you tell us exactly what should happen so we know.

I have a Surface Pro 4 with the MS Type cover for the 4.

When I open it, should it wake automatically? I have it currently with face detection, so I presume it should check this then wake to the desktop.

With the update it seems I still have to press the on button. It does turn on the red light which then turns off, but nothing afterwards.

Also I would like to know how long to wait for something to happen. (I have used Mac, iPad, Android devices where the screen comes on very quickly or a sound, so at least you know something is happening and to wait.

Not hearing anything and having pressed the on button to wake it in the past (before this update) I found it would very occasionally show the 'Surface' word on the screen after about 20 seconds, but not consistently.

This would help me know what to do. Currently nothing has changed after the update, although it took less presses and less time for it to wake, which at least is better.

    Thank you.

First time on this subject… because hadn’t had an issue with sleep. I guess I was lucky with my SP4 i5 16gig. I do however have the phantom touches issue – reported on a different thread. But after the 2/17/16 update, I’m experiencing strange behavior including: 1. Waking brings up the Lock Screen (where I need to swipe upwards to proceed). This screen had never appeared until now.  After swiping up, sometimes I need to enter my password on the next. The thing is, my system is set to “Don’t require password” on wake. 2. MS Outlook will not recognize my reading pane when in portrait mode. Rotate to landscape and the reading pane comes beck. In portrait the reading pane menus becomes grayed and cannot be accessed.  Fix one thing, break another. I’m familiar with the SP2 wake issue and committed myself to never update my SP3 as we learned updating can cause new problems like the SP2 wake issue.  SP3 works fine and has never been updated (not even on day 1).  Can't say the same with my SP4 with Windows 10.

MSFT, please address this new wake issue that you have caused with your 2/17 update.

Sorry to hear that the update doesn't seem to have fixed the issue for some people.

I applied the update and set my surface (SP4/i7/256) to sleep rather than hibernate and tested it a couple of dozen times since.  Its woken up every time without a issue.  Previously, falling asleep in the dock would cause it to black screen every time and now its working perfectly.

It may not have fixed everyone's issues, but with my very limited testing, I'm happy to report that it appears to have fixed my sleep issues. Like many others here, my surface has been set to hibernate rather than sleep for the last few months and the time to wake up is noticeably faster now that it is set to sleep.

Edit, on the fan issue, I just put mine on charge and let it "do it's thing" ...the fan kicked in for about 10 or 15 minutes but then it settled down and hasn't come on since.  It seems pretty common for it to have to run some extra background tasks after a big update.

    Cheers,

    Dave

This update did not fix the problem for me.  I still get the same black screen about 40% of the time when coming out of sleep.  Haven't noticed the fan running though.
