Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

The firmware update has arrived.  Does anyone know if this is THE FIX we are waiting for?

I can report that this issue started occurring with my Surface, too. I never experienced it for several months, where I didn't have the type cover, but now it is getting more annoying every day.

I unplug the Surface in the morning and plug it back in when I set it up at the office. I never disconnect the keyboard, really. Usually, it succeeds in waking up. However, after coming home the last two days I had to use the two button restart methods explained above in order to see anything.

Frankly, this is annoying. I noticed before that Surface tends to be a little on the slow side when it comes to responsiveness after waking up. But with the keyboard attached, sometimes I need to wait 5 seconds until it shows any sign of life, other times it doesn't wake up at all or the screen backlight turns on, but all I see is black.

Seriously, this needs to get fixed. I don't think I am doing anything weird with the device. My usage pattern is probably pretty much what the Surface was made for.

I have checked the maintenance reports and I am getting the same picture as some of you guys have posted here. Basically, there has rarely a day gone by without a critical hardware error. Most of the time I don't really notice those errors, but today, it seems that the times the two errors occurred are pretty much consistent with when I closed the lid for a lunch break and leaving. However, only the second one left my Surface unresponsive and sometimes there is no hardware error at all just before I have to restart.

Ok, seems the karma is against me :(

I just discovered that, even with the steps described above, if I am listening to music (Groove in my case) and the device screen goes off (not sleep, simply off while music is on), it won't came back. The music stops and everything seems to freeze, and nothing is shown in any screen.

So it turns out is not so stable after all.

By the way, all my tests are with 2 monitors connected through the Surface Dock. I use the Surface as my working station... when it works, of course.

I am not convinced the Driver update works using the Dock and another monitor.  Hence I have stuck with the other fix. I use Sleep for up to 59 minutes, and then Hibernate.  I haven't had any issues for several weeks.  The fan seems better over the past couple weeks too.  It's loud, but not on forever anymore.  Hasn't come on much at all.  I don't like Hibernate, as it does take longer to wake and it uses the hard drive, but for now it works.

The other problem is using sleep from Start>Power>Sleep doesn't require my PIN to wake so a security risk. Hence I use Windows + L to lock when away for a short time.

Here are two remedies that work for now till Microsoft fix without the hard reboot.

    1. changing project settings
    2. software reboot

     . . .

This is a helpful variation on the solution I proposed on p54.  I think <Windows Key>+'P' will get you straight to the Project control screen and be simpler than typing 'project'.  I tried using the up and down arrows on that screen, which is fine if you have a display working so you know where it's starting from (which varies), but I think the blind touch screen solution is much better.

Note also that dfosbenner suggests that Ctrl-Alt-Del also works, which I'll try next time.

Overall, though, I have found that turning off the automated 'sleep' function and always manually using the power button to put to sleep, has reduced my problem frequency to a tolerable 2 - 3 times a week.
