Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Yes, please post where to find this error.

Got 2 Surface Pro's here, one of mine, and one of my dad's. This last one got disconnected with the type cover a couple of weeks ago, aren't able to fix this. Switched both type covers, but on mine both type covers are working perfectly, and both type covers aren't working on the SP4 of my dad :-(

Kind of done with this issue now

Im sorry, cant say where, its a log file not a configuration file. Find words with error in it og for easyer ready try the program cmtrace or some other log tracer program. You can also try to uninstall the driver and then look at the log when you install it again to see what it say.

Cants say where mine was, dont have that surface anymore since it was replaced. Hope it helps a bit.

My Surface Pro 3 keyboard is no longer functioning.  I went to the local Microsoft Store to see what help was available for this issue and expected that someone would be able to fix the problem.  The people at the store were very friendly and interested in trying to help.  I was told that this was a known issue, that Microsoft had recently issued an update that rendered the keyboard inoperative and that there is currently no known resolution.  I was also told that since my computer was purchased in 2014 Microsoft was no longer supporting this computer and that I should purchase an after market Bluetooth keyboard.  I am very disappointed in what appears to be Microsoft's planned obsolescence practice.  I  will consider this when making future computer purchases.

Found that in the setupAPI.log file under C:\Windows\INF. there was an error on my firmware saying that i should contact my device manufacturer.

Can you please post a copy of the section of that log file showing this?

    Hi All.

I got my refurbished device (after a couple of turns getting it back and fourth for crappy exchange units). My surface was out of waranty, so getting in contact with Microsoft was not really easy, went for the Windows support team that then redirected me to the surface team. Beforehand i had tried every solution mentioned in here, reinstalled windows and stuff like that. Found that in the setupAPI.log file under C:\Windows\INF. there was an error on my firmware saying that i should contact my device manufacturer. After they took my log files and i pointed to that in it, they agreed to replace my device.

I must say that the keyboard did not work in UEFI but did show up in device management. It also reinstalled fine after removing the driver. So this was a genuine firmware problem.

For reference, the service request was: 1466888675

Please be kind to the supporters at Microsoft, they really do want to help, but they need the facts to be there to do anything. The one that helped me did really everything he could.

I hope this surface hold for more than a year this time, my first surface (that i got replaced) was with the flickering screen. So i dont hold my breath.

Hope you guys can use this. Remember to look in the logs, they will show if something is off. Good luck all.
