I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

Same happened to my surface after last update. It won't detect the cover and just lists keyboards as HID device in device manager. I have tried everything including the full 8gb recovery image and nothing works. The only fix is an inferior bluetooth keyboard which I could buy with the money I can get for selling my perfect typecover.
Cannot believe this is the situation, can anyone recommend a bluetooth keyboard !
THIS IS B.S. MICROSOFT!!! This is suppose to be a premium top of the line product. We paid top dollar for what we thought would be a premium product. Instead, we've been plagued with throttling, power management issues, clunky user experiences and now this. This has been by far the worst purchase I have ever made.
I’m here to show microsoft that I as well had the same issue after the July 2018 update. My cover type worked perfectly right before the update and after the update a non-working type cover. I went through every single troubleshoot as well: restart, unplug then plug back in, try to uninstall/reinstall the type cover in device panel but it was missing, cleaning of the connectors with alcohol, the pressing of the power button and the + volume button at the same time, diagnostic check, surface 4 firmware update, and the microsft store where my type cover worked on other surfaces. In the end nothing worked and I was quoted the $450.00 solution. Which is utterly ridiculous! Why would anyone with any connected brain cells do that, only for Microsoft to make another error that breaks your type cover again that they won’t admitt to or attempt to correct?!?! Microsoft a billion dollar company is treating their customers like a fly by night storm-chaser contractor. Take your money then run on you to fix their mess. Wow.
Follow up:
After a clean install didn't solve the issue, I brought my Surface to the Microsoft store. After determining that the keyboard cover wasn't the issue (which I already knew), they took it in for a day to run diagnostics and do their own clean reinstall, apparently with tools unavailable to the general public. They couldn't fix it, so they suggested my options were to pay the out of warranty repair fee ($450), or they would give me the full Surface 4 trade in value towards a new device.
Declined both options. Yes, my Surface was out of warranty, but come on Microsoft - it broke because of your faulty software/firmware update, not because of wear and tear. If you can break it with an update, you can certainly fix it with an update?
