I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all. I rarely take my surface anywhere.
This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I started with Windows 95 and bugs and blue screens was the part off windows.
After Windows 7 i thought to my self this guys from Microsoft have learned something over the years. My envy from Apple dissapeard.
Today after 2 wonderful years off Surface pro 4 i realize that was gone!
I have here 2 Surfaces Pro 4
One is on Windows version 1709 and is stuck on the update. Luckily
IT WORKS
The other was working. It updated to version 1803 and Surface type cover not working.
Formatted 3 times.
Experimented surface diagnostic tool and nothing.
The keyboard is working fine because i have tried it in the other Surface
MIcrosoft what have happened?
Is it time to move on to apple after all this years or your are going to work on a solution?
If not be honest and say to your customers that your "PREMIUM PRODUCTS" are intended to last the 2 years of guaranty and then become obsolete.
Will wait a month for Microsoft to resolve their credibility and produce a patch to resolve the mess they created if not see you in MAC OS.

2018-11-08T05:24:07+00:00 Took my SP4 to the local MS retail store. As expected I detached my 'dead' type cover and stuck it on to one of the tech's units and it works fine. Put their keyboard onto my SP4 and nothing. Retail wouldn't do anything about it and conveniently the model is out of warranty. He suggested the $600 CAD out of warranty replacement fee wouldn't be worth it so that's nice...
Last time I buy a surface product. I have Dell's and ThinkPads that are over 15 years old and have no problems.
Not pleased.

Hey Microsoft, you can't ignore this problem, you should give us a solution ASAP.
